The Softball Graduate Captain Was Selected as One of 30 National Candidates

Siena Softball graduate student captain Maddie McMahon has been selected as one of 30 softball candidates nationally for the 2021 edition of the prestigious Senior CLASS Award, the award committee announced Thursday morning. McMahon was the only student athlete from the MAAC and one of just two players from the Northeast Region selected as a candidate this year.

To be eligible for the honor, a student athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character, and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

"Maddie is the perfect example of someone who should be a candidate for this award," Head Coach Casey Bump said. "She works extremely hard on and off the field, and we couldn't be more honored to have her on our team and back for another season."

McMahon becomes Siena College's 23rd Senior Class Award Candidate since 2010 and joins Men's Basketball senior captain Manny Camper in being selected for candidacy during the 2020-21 academic year. The Red Bank, New Jersey native is the third softball student athlete in program history to receive recognition, alongside program greats Madysen Cossack (2019) and Shannon Jones (2013).

Throughout her career at Siena, McMahon has excelled in each of the four criteria outlines in the Senior CLASS Award: community, classroom, character, and competition.

McMahon has taken the lead in her team's community service efforts while at Siena. The team has taken part in several community service activities, including serving meals to children and families staying at the Ronald McDonald House of Albany, volunteering at Siena's annual Festa Vino food and wine festival fundraiser, and teaching softball basics to local girl scouts.

The first graduate student in program history, McMahon is enrolled in Siena's MBA Program, and held a perfect 4.0 GPA during the Fall 2020 semester. The right-handed pitcher completed her undergraduate career with a 3.78 GPA, earning her degree in marketing in May of 2020. She earned the Outstanding Academic Athlete Award for graduating with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. A three-time MAAC All-Academic Team member, McMahon has also earned MAAC Academic Honor Roll status four times, NFCA All-American Scholar honors twice, and a spot on the ECAC Presidential Honor Roll in 2018.

McMahon has long been regarded as a leader on her team and enters her second year as a team captain. She is a member of Siena's Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).

A two-time MAAC Pitcher of the Week, McMahon was a second-team All-MAAC selection in 2019 with 114 strikeouts and a 13-8 record that season. She holds a 3.67 career ERA with a 32-28 career record. She enters this season tied for third in career shutouts (7), fourth in wins (32), sixth in strikeouts (331), seventh in games started (59) and innings pitched (370), eighth in appearances (85) and tied for ninth in complete games (28).
