Marist and Saint Peter’s to Meet in Women’s Basketball Championship Game
Atlantic City, N.J. (March 12, 2021) – The 2021 Hercules Tires MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship matchup is now set. No.1 Marist with a dominant performance against No. 4 Fairfield advances to the championship to take on No.3 Saint Peter’s who defeated No. 7 Rider.

Key Moments:
- The Tropicana Player of the Game was Marist’s Willow Duffell, who scored 17 points added nine rebounds and six assists.
- Willow Duffell started out the game strong scoring Marist's first eight points.
- The Red Foxes received contributions across the board. Trinasia Kennedy added 17 points while playing lock down defense on the other end. Sarah Barcello had 12 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Caitlin Weimar narrowly missed a double-double with 11 rebounds to go along with nine points.
- Marist held Fairfield without a field goal in the final 4:23 of the third quarter.
- Callie Cavanaugh kept the Stags in the game in the first half with 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting, accounting for 10 of the team's 25 points. Cavanaugh finished with a season high 16 points.
Notables:
- Marist held Fairfield to .309 (17-for-55) shooting from the field, and .200 (4-for-20) shooting from three-point range.
- The Red Foxes lead the battle of the boards 39-31.
- Marist led from coast to coast with the Stags knotting up the score twice in the opening quarter.
- This was The Stags 24th appearance in program history in the MAAC Tournament Semifinals.

- Leading the way for the Peacocks with 16 points was Redshirt-senior Taiah Thornton, the Tropicana player of the game.
- Thornton also added a game-high seven assists and six rebounds in the game.
- The Peacocks spread out the wealth with five players scoring in double figures. Thornton (16 ponts), Tyara McQueen (11 points), Binta Salawu (13 points), Williams (13 points), James (12 points), and Tyara McQueen (11 points) all provided major contributions to the team.
- In the third quarter, Rider shot 60 percent (9-of-15) from the field and outscored SPU, 22-17.
Notables:
- Peacocks return to the Hercules Tires MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship for the first time in 19 years.
- Head coach Marc Mitchell is the first Saint Peter's women's basketball head coach to reach the MAAC Championship final since Peacocks hall of fame coach Mike Granelli.
- Victoria Toomey scored 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting. She also grabbed seven rebounds.
- Makayla Firebaugh had 16 points thank to 4-of-6 shots from three-point range
