Marist Claims Second Straight MAAC Rocket League Esports Championship

Edison, N.J. (March 19, 2021) – Marist College defeated Fairfield University 4-2 to claim the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rocket League Championship, for the second straight year. The Red Foxes won the best-of-seven series 4 games to 2 with 2-1, 3-2, 2-1, and 6-2 victories. The Stags wins came in Game 2 with a 5-1 win and Game 5 in overtime with 2-1 win.  
 
The title marks the first of the 2021 MAAC Esports Championships and the second ever MAAC Esports Rocket League Championship in MAAC history.

Marist’s Anthony “Tones” Gandini was named the 2021 MAAC Esports Rocket League MVP. Winning the award for a second straight year.
 
Marist’s championship run began with a sweep of No. 5 Siena College in the semifinals. The Red Foxes took down the Saints 6-1, 3-0, 5-2 en route to the championship series. Before Fairfield’s victories against the Red Foxes in the Championship, Marist had never lost a single game in the MAAC Esports Rocket League Championship history.
  
Fairfield’s run to the finals began with a sweep over Manhattan College. The Stags won with a dominant first game 10-0, followed by a 1-0 one-goal game and closed up the series with a 7-1 victory to advance to the semifinals.
 
In the semifinals Fairfield took on Niagara, where once again the Stags only needed three games to sweep the series. The Stags took the first game 7-2, followed by back-to-back 5-0 wins to take the series and advance to the finals.
 
MAAC Overwatch Championship action is set to begin tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. with the games continuing all the way to the semifinals starting at 1:20 p.m. The Championship games will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 21.
 
Also starting tomorrow is the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate MAAC Championship beginning at 2:30 p.m. with No. 8 Fairfield University facing No. 9 Rider University and No. 4 Marist College taking on No. 5 Canisius College. Games are scheduled to begin every hour and a half, with the MAAC Championship beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 21.
