2020-21 MAAC Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Championship Preview
EDISON, N.J. (Mar. 4, 2021) - The 2020/21 MAAC Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Championships will be hosted on March 5, 2021 at the Seaview Golf Club in Galloway, New Jersey On the men's side, Iona College looks to win its 30th consecutive MAAC Championship Title, while the Gaels look for their fifth-straight and 15 out of the last 16 title on the women’s side.
The women’s 6k race begins at 11:00 a.m. and the men’s five-mile race starts at 12:00 p.m.
The Iona Men’s Cross Country team seeks to continue their championship reign dating back to 1991. Iona’s Ehab El-Sandali received the MAAC Most Outstanding Runner award last year while Joshua DeSouza, received the MAAC Most Outstanding Rookie award for the Gaels. Iona Men’s Cross Country is currently ranked No. 14 in the USTFCCCA National Poll and Number 1 in the Northeast.
On the women’s side, Iona won the 2019 MAAC Women’s Cross Country Championship and Egle Morenaite was named the MAAC’s Most Outstanding Runner. Egle became the first female runner in MAAC history to win three straight individual championship titles and looks to make history and make it four in a row. The Gaels who are currently ranked number 5 in the Northeast are trying to win their 15
th overall championship title.
As COVID-19 has created challenges for intercollegiate athletics, the MAAC has implemented COVID-19 risk mitigation strategies, including appropriate testing. COVID Protocols for the Cross Country Championships include:
- Teams to be tested 72 hours before arriving
- Provide attestation forms
- Participants will be masked at all times except when competing. All championship personnel that aren’t competing such as coaches, volunteers, and MAAC staff will be masked at all times.
- Social distancing will be followed at all times except during competition.
