Iona's Isaiah Ross Named Finalist for Lou Henson Award
BOSTON, MA – Earlier this month College Insider announced the finalists for the 2020-21 Lou Henson award. Iona College guard Isaiah Ross has bene named one of the finalist for the Lou Henson Award in recognition for his accomplishments during his senior year campaign.
The Lou Henson award honors the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who won 775 games in 41 seasons.
Henson is the winningest coach in Illinois basketball history with 423 victories. During his 21 seasons (1975-1996), Henson led the Fighting Illini to 16 postseason appearances, including 12 NCAA tournaments and a Final Four appearance in 1989. Henson, who is also the all-time winningest coach in New Mexico State history with 289 victories, is one of only 11 coaches to take two different schools to the NCAA Final Four. His teams have made 19 NCAA appearances and four NIT appearances.
Players on teams from the following conferences are eligible for the award: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast. The recipient of the 2021 award will be announced on April 1.
Ross started in all 18 games for the Gaels and led the Maroon & Gold and the MAAC in scoring averaging 18.4 points per game. The 2020-21 All-MAAC First team honoree shot 38.3% from beyond the arc and 45.5% overall from the floor. Making 2.6 three-pointers per game, Ross also took advantage of his trips to the stripe with an 81.2% free throw percentage.
Ross scored double-double figures in all but two games during Iona's 2020-21 season. He had three games this season with 30+ points, including a career-best 33 points against Hofstra (Dec. 5). Ross scored 19 points in the Gaels' NCAA Tournament game against No. 2 Alabama.
During the season Ross was voted the MAAC Player of the Week three times.
