Monmouth Claims 2020-21 MAAC Men’s Tennis Regular Season Title
EDISON, NJ – Monmouth University (12-2, 5-0 MAAC) has clinched the top seed for the 2020-21 MAAC Men’s Tennis Championship. They sealed the regular season title with a 5-2 win over Fairfield University (6-3, 4-1 MAAC) on April 18. The Hawks have now won their sixth consecutive MAAC Regular Season Title.
The Hawks picked up singles victories from Max Benaim in the No. 2 spot, Victor Castro in the No. 3 spot, Lucca Silva in the No. 4 spot, and Gabriel Busato in the No. 6 spot. The Hawks swept the double pairings with wins from Benaim and Sergio Martinez in the No. 1 spot, Castro and Silva in the No. 2 spot and Will Cooke Wharton and Charles Gortzounian in the No. 3 spot. After starting the season 2-2, the Hawks have now won 10 matches in a row, outscoring opponents 58-9 in that 10-game span.
The Hawks have won the MAAC title four straight times and have made the championship match on every occasion since 2014. In the 2019 tournament, Monmouth defeated Fairfield 4-0 in the semifinals before beating Quinnipiac 4-0 in the Championship Match.
The 2020-21 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Championship will be held at Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, New Jersey. Semifinal action begins Saturday, April 24 and the finals take place Sunday, April 25. For more information on the 2020-21 MAAC Tennis Championships, visit maacsports.com/tennis.
