2021 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships Preview
WEST WINDSOR, NJ (April 23, 2021) – The 2021 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships are set to start on Saturday, April 24 at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, New Jersey. The competition will begin at 10 a.m. with the Men’s semifinals followed by the Women’s semifinals at 2 p.m.
Quinnipiac University (8-4, 6-0 MAAC) heads to West Windsor as the No. 1 seed on the women’s side, completing the season undefeated in MAAC play. The Bobcats are riding a 49-regular season conference game winning streak. However, the Bobcats will be looking to reclaim their Tennis Title after dropping the 2019 Championship match to Fairfield 3-4. Quinnipiac will be in search of their sixth title as they face No. 4 seed Niagara University (4-7, 2-4 MAAC). In their lone matchup this season, the Bobcats defeated the Purple Eagles by a score of 7-0, sweeping the singles and taking two of the three doubles matches. Niagara returns to the postseason after missing the tournament in 2019 and is in search of their first championship match appearance since 2015.
The No. 2 seed on the women’s side belongs to the defending champions, Fairfield University (5-7, 3-2 MAAC) who will face off against No. 3 seed Siena College (5-3, 3-2 MAAC). The Stags bested the Saints in their regular season match up, 5-2, on April 11. The Saints however went on to win their three next matches to earn a postseason berth. Siena is searching for their first MAAC Championship since 2006.
On the men’s side, Monmouth (12-2, 5-0) claimed the MAAC Regular Season Title after going undefeated in conference play. After starting the season 2-2 the Hawks ran the table the rest of the way winning 10 straight games. They defeated their MAAC opponents by a combined score of 31-4. Monmouth will take on the No. 4 seed Marist (2-0, 2-0 MAAC). Marist completed their abbreviated season in three days defeating Niagara 4-3 on April 16 and Quinnipiac 4-3 on the last day of the regular season. The Red Foxes will be searching for their first MAAC Championship since 2015 when they defeated Monmouth 4-2.
The final teams on the men’s side are No. 2 Fairfield (6-3, 4-1 MAAC) and No. 3 Quinnipiac (5-4-1, 3-3 MAAC). The Stags are making their fifth consecutive postseason appearance and will be looking for their first championship since 2012. Fairfield finished the season 4-1 in MAAC play with their only loss coming in the final regular season match against the No. 1 seed Monmouth. The Bobcats enter the postseason dropping their last three matches, but will be looking to make it back to the championship match after losing in 2019 to Monmouth, 4-0. Quinnipiac is searching for its first Men’s Tennis MAAC Championship.
The 2021 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Championship will be held at Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, New Jersey. Semifinal action begins Saturday, April 24 with No. 1 Monmouth taking on No. 4 Marist and No. 2 Fairfield taking on No. 3 Quinnipiac.
