Monmouth Claims 2021 MAAC Men’s Tennis Championship Title

WEST WINDSOR, NJ (April 25, 2021) – The Monmouth Hawks Men’s Tennis program has claimed the 2021 MAAC Men’s Tennis Championship Title by defeating Fairfield University 4-2. The Hawks will advance to the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship.
 
Monmouth University (14-2, 5-0 MAAC) claimed their fifth consecutive MAAC Championship with their victory over Fairfield (6-4, 4-1 MAAC). The Hawks won the doubles points as they had victories from the pairings of Will Cooke Wharton and Charles Gortzounian and Victor Castro and Lucca Silva taking the games 6-4 and 7-5 respectively. Gabriel Busato would earn the Hawks’ second point of the match in the No. 6 spot defeating Griffin Schlesinger 6-1, 6-0. Fairfield’s Kaya Gore would strike back for the Stags and earn their first point as he defeated Cooke Wharton, 6-1, 6-3. Monmouth and Fairfield would then again trade single points as Castro defeated the Stags’ Jonathan Olive-Blanco, 7-6, 7-5 and Fairfield’s Lewis Edwards defeated Silva 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to bring the match to 3-2. Earning the championship point for the Hawks was Sergio Martinez as he defeated the Stags’ Keean Shah 5-7, 7-5, 6-2. Martinez’s effort would help him be named the 2021 MAAC Men’s Tennis Championship Most Outstanding player after the match.
 
The Hawks will automatically advance to the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship tournament. Monmouth will find out their matchup and time on May 3 at 6:30 p.m. when the Men’s Tennis Selection show takes place at NCAA.com
