2021 MAAC Women’s Water Polo Major Awards and All-MAAC Teams Announced
Edison, N.J. (April 30, 2021) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has announced the 2020-21 Women’s Water Polo All-MAAC Team and Major Award winners, as voted by the league’s seven coaches.
Madison Martinez of La Salle University was named the 2021 Women’s Water Polo Offensive Player of the Year. Martinez recorded 39 goals and 36 assists for 75 points to lead the Explorers this season, her assists were also a team-high. The Senior registered 62 shots this season with a .629 shooting percentage.
The 2021 Women’s Water Polo Defensive Player of the Year is Marina Hyham of Marist College. Hyham boasted a 6-0 record this season, making starts in five games. The junior goalie registered 39 saves, a .600 save percentage, and a 7.05 goals-against average. She also helped Marist to earn the number one seed in the red division in the MAAC Championship this weekend.
Long Island University’s Paola Dominguez earned the 2021 Women’s Water Polo Rookie of the Year award. The freshman finished the season with 21 goals and 12 assists for 33 points. On the defensive side, Dominguez also recorded 15 steals. Dominguez was a key component in the Sharks’ undefeated, 7-0, season.
Marist’ Chris Vidale was named the BSN Sports 2021 Women’s Water Polo Coach of the Year. In his fifth season at the helm of the Red Foxes, Vidale led his team to a 6-2 record and the top team in the red division. Vidale helped guide Marist to their 17th consecutive MAAC Championship appearance and will be seeking their seventh consecutive MAAC Championship game appearance this weekend. Marist is currently ranked 21st in the 2021 Women’s Varsity Polls.
