Marist Advances to Face VMI in the Championship Game

Marist College (7-2, 6-2 MAAC) defeated La Salle University (11-5, 6-2 MAAC) in sudden victory overtime by a score of 12-11. Offensive Player of the Year Madison Martinez scored late in the fourth to tie the game at nine and force overtime. The Red Foxes and Explorers would trade goals in the first overtime period, and in the second Marist’ Lauren Smith would find the back of the net with just nine seconds left to force sudden victory overtime. In sudden victory overtime, the Red Foxes would force a turnover and Shinae Carrington would score the game-winning goal. Marist will face off against VMI on Sunday, May 2 for the MAAC Women’s Water Polo Championship at 1:00 p.m.
Marist Notes
- Marist advances to their seventh consecutive Championship game.
- Justine Castro and Viktoria Orlova led the way for the Red Foxes as they each finished with three goals on four and 10 shots respectively. Castro had a team-high five points as she added two assists.
- Myriam Lizotte had three points (2g, 1a) on the day and had a game-high two steals.
- In net, the Defensive Player of the Year Marina Hyham made four saves and had one steal.
- Carrington recorded two goals on the day and had one assist. Her second goal of the day was the game-winning goal for the Red Foxes.
- Lauren Smith and Kathryn McCullough both tallied a goal.
- Marist will be looking for their first championship since 2010 when they defeated Iona 18-5.
La Salle Notes
- Sarah DeFusco recorded a game-high in goals (5) and points (6).
- Martinez registered three goals and two assists.
- Karle Linden, Sophie Appler, and Casey Malone all found the back on the net once.
- Goalie Emma Gurasich made nine saves, had a .429 save percentage, and recorded one steal.
