Monmouth Men’s Lacrosse to Face Top-Seeded North Carolina in NCAA Tournament First Round
EDISON, N.J. (May 10, 2021) – The 2021 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s Lacrosse Champion, Monmouth University, will open the 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Tournament against the No. 1 overall seed, North Carolina, as announced on Sunday on the NCAA Lacrosse Selection Show. The two teams will face off in Chapel Hill, NC on Saturday, May 15 at 12 p.m. on ESPNU.
Monmouth (8-2, 4-2 MAAC), the No. 2 seed in the 2021 MAAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship, defeated top-seeded Manhattan College in the championship game, 14-9, to capture the program’s second MAAC title. Matt Soutar was named Championship MVP after recording a .753 winning percentage in faceoffs (55-of-73) over three tournament games. He also tallied 26 ground balls for the entire championship.
North Carolina (11-2, 4-2 ACC) returns to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2017 and for their 33
rd time overall. They won a share of the 2021 ACC Regular Season Championship along with Duke, after the Tar Heels defeated the Blue Devils back on May 2 to end the regular season with matching 4-2 records. This will be the first-ever meeting between Monmouth and North Carolina.
The NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse semifinal and championship games will be held at Pratt and Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT, from May 29-31, and will be hosted by Fairfield University. For more information on the 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship, click
