Marist Defeats Salem in the Opening Round of the National Collegiate Women’s Water Polo Championship

2021 National Collegiate Women’s Water Polo Championship – Opening Round

Marist College (9-0, 6-2 MAAC) defeated Salem University (18-12) by a score of 9-8 in the opening round of the National Collegiate Women’s Water Polo Championship. This was the Red Foxes’ first national collegiate tournament victory since 2010 and it the program’s first non-consolation victory in their history. Marist jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but the Salem Tigers quickly bounced back and took a 4-2 lead in the second quarter. The Tigers would have a 5-3 halftime lead. The Red Foxes would strike back at the start of the third quarter and would find themselves tied at six going into the fourth quarter. Finding themselves down one with 50 seconds left Marist’s India Alter would find the back of the net and tie the game at 8-8. With just six seconds left on the clock, the Red Foxes drew a penalty shot and Myriam Lizotte connected to give Marist a 9-8 win. Marist will advance to the First Round and face No. 1 seeded USC (19-1) on Friday, May 14 at 3:00 p.m.
 
Marist Note
  • Marist won their first National Collegiate Women’s Water Polo Championship Game since 2010 and it was the program’s first non-consolation victory in team history.
  • India Alter led the way on offense for the Red Foxes scoring five of the teams nine goals.
  • Myriam Lizotte and Viktoria Orlova each tallied four points, two goals, and two assists apiece.
  • Justine Castro recorded a goal. Sawyer Alter (2), Shinae Carrington (1), and Kathryn McCullough (1) all had an assist.
  • In net Marina Hyham made eight saves while facing 28 shots.
  • The Red Foxes held a 31-28 advantage in shots.
  • Marist went three-for-seven on the powerplay converting at .429 percent compared to Salem’s .200 percentage.
  • Marist doubled Salem’s goals in the second half 6-3 to complete the comeback.
