Marist and Manhattan Pitch Shutouts on Day 1 of the MAAC Softball Championship

2021 MAAC Softball Championship – Championship Round Game 1

Marist College (15-10, 12-14 MAAC) pulled off another upset as the eighth-seeded Red Foxes defeated second-seeded Canisius College (24-12, 20-12 MAAC). The Red Foxes’ Caroline Baratta went deep in the top of the third to give Marist a 1-0 lead and that would be all the run support Calista Phippen would need. Phippen pitched a complete game shutout and struck out a season-high 11. The Red Foxes would go on to add four more runs and take the game 5-0. Marist will play the winner of Manhattan vs. Fairfield tomorrow. Canisius will take on the loser of Manhattan vs. Fairfield in the first elimination game starting at 11:00 a.m.
 
Marist Notes
  • Six Red Foxes recorded nine hits and they were led by Kaley Coltrain who had a game-high three.
  • Baratta, Coltrain, and Hunter Hand each recorded an RBI. Coltrain and Baratta each hit solo home runs. Baratta’s home run was her fourth of the season, a new career-high. Coltrain has homered in six of her last seven games.
  • Calista Phippen pitched a complete game shutout, striking out a season-high 11, scattered four hits, and walked one.
 
Canisius Notes
  • Kara Paradowski, Morgan Altman, Gianna Fazzolari, and Hannah Catallo-Stooks each recorded a hit for the Griffs.
  • Fazzolari and Lindsi Dennis each recorded a team-high seven putouts.
  • Alexis Churchill started and pitched 3.2 innings, allowing six hits, three earned runs, struck out two, and walked one. Megan Giese appeared in relief pitching the final 3.1 innings scattering three hits, allowing two runs (one earned), struck out four, and walked one.

No. 4 Fairfield – 0 vs. No. 6 Manhattan – 2

Manhattan College (20-14, 17-13 MAAC) defeated Fairfield (22-13, 20-12 MAAC) in Game 2 of the MAAC Softball Championship Round. The Jaspers and Stags were in a scoreless affair until Manhattan broke through in the top of the fifth inning when Annie Moore hit a bases-loaded single to take a 1-0 lead. The Jaspers would then go on to add an insurance run in the top of the seventh and take the game by a score of 2-0.  
 
Manhattan Notes
  • Annie Moore, Marika Deemer, Gabriella Mazzotta, Victoria Alonso, and Jessie Rising all had a hit for Manhattan.
  • Moore tallied the team’s lone RBI.
  • Nicole Williams pitched a complete game, two-hit, shutout. She struck out a season-high 13 and walked three.
 
Fairfield Notes
  • Kaitlin Hoffman and Lacey Olaff each recorded a hit for the Stags.
  • Olaff had a team-high nine putouts.
  • Allie Bridgman started for the Stags and pitched 4.1 innings, scattered three hits, struck out two, walked two, and gave up one run.  Baily Taylor appeared in relief pitching the final 2.2 innings, striking out two, giving up two hits and one run.
