Manhattan and Canisius Walk-Off Wins Help Propel Them to MAAC Championship Game

Canisius College (25-12, 20-12 MAAC) won in walk-off fashion over Fairfield University (22-14, 20-12 MAAC) in the first elimination game of the tournament. The Griffs and Staggs were scoreless headed into the fifth inning but the Stags would break the tie in the top of the fifth as Kaitlin Hoffman plated two with her two-RBI double. The Griffs would have an answer in the bottom of the fifth as Griffs scored a run to make the game 2-1. Canisius would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh and Shealyn Ollison drew a walk to score the tying run. Erin Hufford would then hit a ball into left field and Sydney Costan would score the game-winning run for the Griffs. Canisius advanced to play Game 5 against Marist College.
Canisius Notes
- Erin Hufford, Gianna Fazzolari, Hannah Catallo-Stooks, and Sydney Costan each tallied a hit.
- Costan and Shealyn Ollsion each recorded an RBI for the Griffs.
- Emily Nicosia started the game for Canisius pitching 5.0 innings, scattering five hits, walking three, striking out two, and conceding two runs. Alexis Churchill appeared in relief pitching the final two innings and did not give up a hit or a walk and struck out two. Churchill was credited with the win.
Fairfield Notes
- Megan Forbes (2), Kaitlin Hoffman (1), Madison Robicheau (1), and Sam Merino (1) recorded the five hits for the Stags on the day.
- Hoffman tallied the Stags two RBIs.
- Katie Kudlacik pitched 6.0 innings scattering four hits, giving up three runs (two earned), walked four, and struck out five. Bailey Taylor appeared in relief in the bottom of the seventh, threw 17 pitches, and walked one.

2021 MAAC Softball Championship – Championship Round Game 4

Manhattan College (21-14, 17-13 MAAC) defeated Marist College (22-14, 20-12 MAAC) in Game 4 of the MAAC Softball Championship Round. The Jaspers and Red Foxes were locked in a pitchers’ duel which saw 19 strikeouts in the game. Both offenses were able to breakthrough in the fourth and tally a run, but the game would still be tied 1-1 at the end of seven. In the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded and two outs, Annie Moore hit a single to score the walk-off winner and advance the Jaspers to the MAAC Softball Championship Game tomorrow. The Jaspers need to win one game tomorrow to become MAAC Champions. With their loss, Marist played Canisius in the second elimination game of the day.
Manhattan Notes
- Six players recorded nine Jasper’s hits on the day. With Annie Moore, Daniela Chiorazzi, and Christine Gebhardt each tallying two hits.
- Moore and Gebhardt each had an RBI.
- Nicole Williams pitched all nine innings for the Jaspers. She scattered nine hits, gave up one unearned run, walked two, and struck out 12. Williams’ has now struck out double-digit batters in three of her last four games.
- Manhattan advances to its first championship game since 2014.
Marist Notes
- Six players tallied Marist’s eight hits. Kaley Coltrain and Hailee Jantorno each had two hits.
- Miah McDonald recorded the team’s lone RBI.
- Calista Phippen pitched 8.2 innings, scattering nine hits, give up two runs (one earned), walked three, and struck out seven.

Canisius College (26-12, 20-12 MAAC) collected their second win of the day while facing elimination as they defeated Marist College (22-14, 20-12 MAAC). Hannah Stooks-Catallo hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second giving the Griffs the only run support they would need in their 1-0 victory. Emily Nicosia would pitch the complete game shutout while only surrendering two hits. Canisius will advance to Game 6 of the MAAC Softball Championship and face Manhattan for the title. Canisius will need to win two games over Manhattan tomorrow to claim the trophy.

- Erin Hufford (2), Kara Paradowski (1), Hannah Stooks-Catallo (1), and Sydney Costan (1) each had hits.
- Stooks-Catallo solo home run was the only run scored in the game.
- Emily Nicosia pitched a complete game shutout only surrendering two hits while striking out seven and walking two.
- This will be Canisius’ first time in the championship game since 2010.
Marist Notes
- Caroline Baratta tallied the Red Foxes two hits.
- Kaley Coltrain had a team-high eight putouts.
- Meghan Haff pitched a complete game scattering five hits, striking out seven, walking two, and surrendered one run.
