2021 MAAC Women’s Rowing Championship Set for Sunday

EDISON, NJ – The 2021 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s Rowing Championship is set for Sunday, May 16 at Cooper River Park in Pennsauken Township, NJ. Nine teams will compete for the conference championship: Canisius College, Drake University, Fairfield University, Jacksonville University, Manhattan College, Marist College, Robert Morris University, Sacred Heart University, and Stetson University.
 
Per Camden County Regulations, the 2021 MAAC Women's Rowing Championship will be closed to all spectators.

For the third straight season, the MAAC will co-host the conference championship with the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Live streaming of the championship will be available on ESPN3. Coverage of the morning session begins at 9:20 a.m. on with heats for the Varsity 8s, Second Varsity 8s, and Varsity 4s. Streaming of the afternoon session will start at 12:30 p.m., along with coverage of the Varsity 4 Grand Final (12:40 p.m.), Second Varsity 8 Grand Final (1:00 p.m.), and Varsity 8 Grand Final (1:20 p.m.). The awards ceremony will begin at 2 p.m., following the Varsity 8 Grand Final.

Marist College vies for back-to-back titles after knocking off five-time reigning champion Jacksonville University in 2019. Accumulating 53 points to capture their 11th MAAC Championship in program history, the Red Foxes claimed victory in the Grand Finals of the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8, finishing with times of 6:47.52 and 7:08.26, respectively. In the Varsity 4 Grand Final, Marist would take the silver with a time of 8:01.26, just 2.97 seconds behind Jacksonville.
 
In the 2021 MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, Marist beat out Jacksonville for the top spot with 95 points along with six first-place votes. In addition to seeking their second straight title, the Red Foxes look to maintain a 20-year streak of finishing the conference championship in a top-two position.
 
Around the MAAC:
  • Canisius College’s varsity four boats had a strong season debut vs Colgate University at the Black Rock Canal on April 18. The Golden Griffins’ first varsity four finished their two races in first place with times of 9:34.8 and 9:39.1, respectively, while the second varsity four finished with near-identical times of 10:29.4 and 10:29.3 to top the Raiders in both races.  
  • Drake University finished in a 1-1 draw against the University of Kansas in a shortened dual on May 1. The Bulldogs were victorious in the Second Varsity 8 race with a time of 9:09.5. In the 1V/2V race, the Bulldogs finished 15.4 second behind Kansas with a time of 8:43.4.
  • Fairfield University swept the MAAC weekly awards following a tri-meet against Manhattan and Loyola (Md.) on April 24, topping the field in Varsity 8 (7:05.9), Second Varsity 8 (7:05.3), and Varsity 4 (8:21.91) races.
  • Jacksonville turned in their strongest performance of the season during the Hatter Invite, winning every race except one over the two-day event.
  • Manhattan College's second Varsity 4 boat defeated Loyola (Md.) and Fairfield in a tri-meet on April 24, clocking in at 8:15.00.
  • Robert Morris University's Varsity Eight notched three first-place finishes this spring, out-racing George Mason (6:58.50) and Loyola (Md.) in a tri-meet, before defeating Marietta (6:29.1) and Duquesne (6:02.7).
  • Sacred Heart swept Canisius in the afternoon session of the Black Rock Cup on April 25, while also defeating Robert Morris in the Second Varsity 8.
  • Stetson University posted their first ever victory over an ACC school in a tri-meet against Miami and Jacksonville on March 29, with the Varsity 8 team clocking in at 7:03.77 to defeat Miami by just over eight seconds.
