Monmouth Falls to Pittsburgh in Second Round of NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship

Monmouth University (6-3-1, 2-2-1 MAAC) fell to No. 2 Pittsburgh (14-3, 9-1 ACC) by a score of 6-1. The Hawks put pressure on the Panthers all night but were unable to find the back of the net until the 77th minute. Pittsburgh was able to tally two goals in the first half and four in the second, scoring goals in the 25th, 39th, 51st, 57th, 71st, and 88th minute. The Hawks advanced to the second round for the third time in program history, with their first NCAA Championship regulation win, over Bowling Green on Thursday, April 29. The Hawks were picked to finish eighth in the MAAC in the Coaches’ Preseason Poll and went on to take the MAAC Championship by storm after defeating the No. 1, 2, and 3 seeds in the MAAC tournament to win the championship.
 
Monmouth Notes
  • This was Monmouth’s eighth appearance in the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship and they earned their first victory in the first round and moved to 1-6-2 all-time. This was the first time they advanced to the second round since 2011.
  • The MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship MVP Julian Gomez scored the Hawks' only goal. Gomez has now scored in seven consecutive games. Gomez also registered a team-high three shots, two of which were on goal.
  • MAAC Co-Goalkeeper of the Year, Sean Murray made two saves while facing 16 shots on the night.
  • The Hawks finished the game with eight corner kicks to Pittsburgh’s five.
