2021 MAAC Baseball Championship Round - Game 1
Alumni Diamond | Fairfield, CT

Matt Duffy had an exceptional start on the mound for Canisius College (20-14, 17-13 MAAC), going the distance and holding Fairfield University (35-2, 33-1 MAAC) to just one run and four hits as the Golden Griffins defeated the top-seeded Stags in the opening game of the MAAC Baseball Championship Round. Backed by run support from Jake Burlingame, Carlin Dick, and Jacob Victor, Duffy became the first Griff to earn a complete-game victory in the postseason since Garrett Cortright in 2013.

Canisius advances to play Rider on Day 2 of the MAAC Baseball Championship Round. Game time is set for 3 p.m. Fairfield will face Monmouth in an elimination game at 11 a.m.

Fairfield Notes

  • This is just Fairfield’s second loss of the season, with the other coming on May 2 vs. Siena College.
  • Justin Guerrera delivered the lone run for Fairfield with a solo home run in the fourth inning. He would finish the day 1-for-4.
  • Mike Caruso, Matt Venuto, and Owen Wosleger each got one hit along with Guerrera.

Canisius Notes
  • Duffy’s 10 strikeouts are a career-high. It’s just the second time this season a Canisius pitcher has tallied 10 strikeouts in a game (Will Frank).
  • Dick would drive in the game-winning run with his RBI single in the 6th inning. It would be the first of three runs scored by the Griffs during the inning.
  • Victor led the game with three hits, ending the day 3-for-5. Burlingame (2) and Max Grant (2) also tallied multi-hit games.

No. 2 Monmouth University – 5  |  No. 3 Rider University - 9
2021 MAAC Baseball Championship – Championship Round, Game 2
Alumni Diamond | Fairfield, CT

Third-seeded Rider University put together a late rally by scoring five runs in the final two innings of play to defeat No. 2 Monmouth University (24-11, 22-10 MAAC) in their opening game of the MAAC Baseball Championship Round. The Broncs (22-16, 18-16 MAAC) would take an early three-run lead in the second inning, but Monmouth would chip away over the next few innings before taking a 5-4 lead in the 5th. Rider’s Sean McGeehan, who helped extend their lead earlier in the game, would help the Broncs regain control of the game in the 8th with a two-run double to make it 7-5. Socrates Bardatsos and Jordan Erbe would each drive in an insurance run to build Rider’s lead to four, 9-5.

Rider advances to play Canisius on Day 2 of the MAAC Baseball Championship Round. Game time is set for 3 p.m. Monmouth will face Fairfield in an elimination game at 11 a.m.

  • Zach Schild led the Hawks with two RBI.
  • Dixon Black accounted for four of Monmouth’s nine hits, trying the game high. Matt Graber also recorded a multi-hit game with two.

Rider Notes
  • Rider has now scored a total of 29 runs over their last three games.
  • Erbe’s four hits led the Broncs and tied for the game-high.
