Monmouth’s Men’s Tennis to Face UCF in First Round of NCAA Championship

EDISON, NJ (May 3, 2021) – Monmouth University (14-2, 5-0 MAAC) will face UCF (21-3, 7-0 AAC) in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships. The Hawks are coming off the school’s fifth-straight MAAC Championship title. The first round match will take place Saturday, May 8 at the USTA National Campus Collegiate Center in Orlando, FL.
 
The Hawks defeated Fairfield University 4-2 in the MAAC Men’s Tennis Championship on April 24, to claim the title and a NCAA Championship berth. The Most Outstanding Performer for the Hawks was the fifth year Serigo Martinez, who clinched the final point in Monmouth’s win with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Fairfield’s Shah Keean.
 
Before the MAAC Championship, the Hawks took home multiple All-MAAC Teams honors and collected one of the major awards. On the doubles side, William Cooke Wharton and Charles Gortzounian claimed the No. 3 spot, Lucca Silva and Victor Castro claimed the No. 2 spot on the All-MAAC First Team and Max Benaim and Sergio Martinez took home the No. 1 spot on the All-MAAC Second Team. On the singles side, Monmouth claimed the No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 spots on the All-MAAC First Team as Max Benaim, Lucca Silva, Victor Castro and Gabriel Busato took home the honors respectively. Earning All-MAAC Second Team honors were William Cooke Wharton at the No. 1 spot and Sergio Martinez at the No. 5 spot.
