2021 MAAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships Set to Begin Saturday
Edison, N.J. (May 7, 2021) – The MAAC Men's & Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships will begin on Saturday, May 7 at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ – Michael P. Brady Track & Field Complex.
The championships begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday, starting with Men’s hammer throw. Sunday’s events begin at 10 a.m. with women’s Triple Jump. The Sunday’s events of the championships will be broadcast on ESPN+ beginning Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with both live and prerecorded segments.
For the men, Monmouth University looks to capture is seventh straight title. The Hawks are led by head coach Mike Nelson. Nelson took over for Joe Compagni who retired in 2019 and won both the MAAC Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year honors every year at the outdoor championships since Monmouth joined the league in 2014. Redshirt-senior Khalid Slocum returns to this years’ championships after being the 2019 MAAC Co-Men’s Most Outstanding Performer in track events. Slocum took home gold in 2019 in the men’s long jump (7.44 meters), 100M (11.10), 200M (21.50), and the 4x100 relay (41.01).
On the women’s side, Monmouth also looks to with their seventh straight title. The Hawks are led by Brianna Rubio as she has turned in the fastest times in the MAAC in the 100M (12.39), 200M (25.24) and fourth fastest time in the 400M (57.76). In the Long Jump, Monmouth’s Isabelle Warren has turned in the best mark at 5.80m this season in the MAAC. Chibuzo Amonu also sports the best mark in the Hammer Throw at 53.21m and Danielle Steff has the best mark in the Javelin at 50.75m.
