Marist and Fairfield Advance to Championship Round on Day One of MAAC Softball Tournament

2021 MAAC Softball Championship – Quarterfinal Round

Game 1 – Marist 5, Monmouth 3
Game 2 – Marist 6, Monmouth 1,
Marist wins Series, 2-0
Marist College (14-10, 12-14 MAAC) pulled off the biggest upset at the eighth seed as they swept No.1 Monmouth University (25-9, 25-7 MAAC). The Red Foxes got to work early in the first inning of the first game as they scored three times off of four hits. The Hawks would strike right back and tie the game in the bottom of the first as they scored three runs of their own. In the top of the second Marist would score on a sacrifice fly by Sam Freeland and Kaley Coltrain would add an insurance run as she hit the only home run of the day. In the second game of the doubleheader Marist would again find themselves up early as they tallied three runs in the top of the second inning. Monmouth would find their only run of the game in the bottom of the third as Erika Coreth singled to score Lindsey Baron. Marist would go on to add three more insurance runs for Meghan Haff as she pitched a complete game and only allowed three hits. Marist will advance to the championship round and face off against the highest remaining seed.
Marist Notes – Game 1
- Eight Red Foxes tallied a hit and Kaley Coltrain (2), Sam Freeland (1), Shea Walsh (1), and Miah McDonald (1) all recorded an RBI. Coltrain also hit the only home run of the game and had game-high seven putouts.
- Defensive Player of the Year Caroline Baratta registered two hits, two assists, one stolen base, one run, and one putout.
- Calista Phippen pitched a complete game allowing zero earned runs, struck out seven, and only allowed three hits and walked three.
Marist Notes – Game 2
- Nine players for Marist tallied at least one hit as the Red Foxes combined for 13 hits.
- Baratta had a game-high two RBIs and one hit. Freeland, Ali Milam and Hailee Jantorno each registered one RBI.
- Meghan Haff pitched a complete-game three-hitter. She struck out eight and only walked two players.
Monmouth Notes – Game 1
- Tommi Stowers (2), Erika Coreth (1), Devin Coia (1) registered the Hawks four hits. Covia had Monmouth’s only RBI.
- Alyssa Irons went the distance striking out four and only walking one.
Monmouth Notes – Game 2
- Lindsey Baron, Coreth, and Julia Thuer each had one hit. Coreth tallied the Hawks lone RBI.
- Starting the game for the Hawks was Kylie Gletow who pitched three innings, striking out one and walking one. Irons appeared in relief pitching the last four innings striking out two and allowing one run.

Fairfield wins Series, 2-0
Fairfield University (22-12, 20-12 MAAC) swept the doubleheader over the Siena Saints (19-15, 19-13 MAAC) to advance to the championship round. In the first game, Fairfield would tally an early run in the bottom of the first, which would be all the scoring they would need as Allie Bridgman threw a complete game shutout. The Stags would add two insurances run in the game to take the first game 3-0. After allowing the Stags to score the first four runs of the second game Siena would score twice in the top of the sixth inning to bring the game to 4-2, but were unable to score again as Fairfield would go on to win 5-2. Fairfield will advance to the double-elimination championship round taking place from May 13-16.
Fairfield Notes – Game 1
- Six Stags recorded at least one hit and Megan Forbes had a game-high two hits, score a run, and drew one walk.
- Mikayla Rubin, Kaitlin Hoffman, and Evie Wright each had an RBI.
- Allie Bridgman pitched a complete game shutout only allowing three hits, striking out one, and walking two.
Fairfield Notes – Game 2
- Seven Stags tallied at least one hit with Madison Robicheau having a team-high two hits.
- Lacey Olaff (2), Robicheau (1), Rubin (1), Kasey Sekula (1) all recorded an RBI.
- Lauryn Rhinehart pitched 6.1 innings and got the win as she struck out five, allowed seven hits, and walked one. Bailey Taylor appeared in relief and recorded a save.
Siena Notes – Game 1
- Antonia Alba, Angelina Stile, and Isabella Pardo tallied the Saints three hits.
- Nicole Patille started the game and pitched two innings allowing four hits and two earned runs. Taylor Rhinehart appeared in relief pitching four innings, striking out six and walking two while allowing three hits.
Siena Notes – Game 2
- Five Saints recorded hits, Isabelle DeChiaro and Emma McLaughlin had a team-high two hits. DeChiaro also had two RBIs.
- Maddie McMahon pitched 2.2 innings and allowed four hits, three earned runs, and struck out three. Allision Speshyock pitched 2.1 innings struck out one, allowed three hits, and one earned run. Nicole Patille pitched one inning allowing one hit and struck out one.
