A Statement From the MAAC SAAC on Juneteenth
As we continue the month of June we embark on Juneteenth, and for the first time it is recognized as a federal holiday. Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in Texas in the year 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day signifies the active change over the course of history to dismantle the workings of structural, systemic, and individualized racism. It is important that we educate one another on its significance and the value that it holds towards the hope of ending discrimination on this day of Independence.
