NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Katie Jansson announced her resignation as Iona softball head coach to accept the head coaching position at Drexel University. Jansson spent three seasons as the leader of the Maroon & Gold, guiding the program to a 43-45 overall and a 33-18 MAAC record during her tenure.
"Katie has represented the Maroon & Gold so well during her time as both a student-athlete and a coach, and we wish her nothing but the best as she takes the next step in her career," Director of Athletics Matthew Glovaski said. "The entire Iona community is sad to see coach Jansson go, but we are very happy for her and the opportunity she has earned."
"I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to lead my alma mater for the past three seasons. I want to thank Matt Glovaski, Jamie Fogarty and all of the Iona administrators for their guidance and support during my time here," Jansson said. "Also, a special thank you to my players and their families for trusting me and always giving their all- I know they will continue to do great things! Iona will always be a home and I can't wait to follow all of the success headed towards Gael Nation in the future."
In her first season at the helm of the program, Jansson led the Gaels to a 12-8 mark in league play, good enough for the No. 4 seed in the MAAC Championship. Iona won its first game, but would ultimately be eliminated. Four Gaels earned All-MAAC honors that season.
This past season, Jansson mentored the MAAC Player, Pitcher and Rookie of the Year en route to the program's winningest season since 2017. Jansson's coaching career at Iona began in 2017, where she served as an assistant coach under former head coach Melissa Inouye. That season, Iona won the MAAC Regular Season title, helping Jansson secure a head coaching job across town at Monroe College.
Jansson eventually returned to the place where it all started for her as a student-athlete back in 2010. She was a standout student-athlete as a member of the Maroon & Gold during her four seasons, playing an integral part in Iona's three MAAC Championships in 2011, 2012 and 2014. She ranks inside the top 10 in program history with 199 career games played, 517 plate appearances and 79 runs batted in. Her 16 home runs are second-most by a Gael catcher and ranks just outside the top 10 in program history. Academically, she was a three-time MAAC All-Academic Team honoree and NFCA Scholar-Athlete All-American.
A national search for the vacant head coaching position will commence immediately.
