Iona Improves to MAAC-Best 4-0 Mark, Canisius Scores First MAAC Win in Men’s Basketball Action

EDISON, NJ (Jan. 12, 2022) – Defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball champions Iona, improved to a perfect 4-0 in conference play, while Canisius earned its first league win of the season on Tuesday afternoon in MAAC action.

Canisius claimed a 79-67 victory over Quinnipiac in MAAC men's basketball action Tuesday at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, scoring the Griffs first conference win of the season. Led by 57 combined points from the trio of Armon Harried (21), Ahamadou Fofana (18) and Jordan Henderson (18), Canisius improved to 5-3 at home this season. Quinnipiac was led by a career-high 15 points from JJ Riggins, 14 points by Brendan McGuire, and Matt Balanc chipped in with 10 points.

Iona edged Fairfield 80-76 to remain unbeaten in MAAC play, on the road at Webster Bank Arena on Tuesday. Fairfield led by 11 points with just over seven minutes remaining in the game before Iona closed out the contest with a decisive 21-6 run. Nelly Junior Joseph recorded his MAAC-leading seventh double-double of the season, posting 20 points and 14 rebounds. Four other Gaels also scored in double-figures, with Elijah Joiner and Tyson Jolly scoring 14 points each, Dylan van Eyck adding 13 points, and Berrick JeanLouis chipping in with 10 points. For the Stags, Jake Wojcik scored a game-high 24 points off of a career-best eight made three-pointers, while Taj Benning (13) and Supreme Cook (10) also surpassed double digits.
