EDISON, NJ (Jan. 15, 2022) – Four Friday night Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball games did not disappoint, producing three thrillers and a statement win. Iona remains atop of the league, improving to 5-0 in MAAC play, Saint Peter’s handed Monmouth its first MAAC loss, and both Quinnipiac and Siena earned come-from behind wins to highlight an action-packed Friday.

Iona earned a wire-to-wire 88-76 win over rival Manhattan at the Hynes Center on ESPNU Friday night. The Gaels improved to MAAC-leading records of 5-0 and 13-3, while remaining a perfect 6-0 at home. Iona used a balanced attack, having four score 10 or more points and five others post at least six points. Tyson Jolly led the Gaels with 16 points, followed by 13 from Nelly Junior Joseph, and 11 each from Elijah Joiner and Dylan van Eyck. Manhattan had the trio of Jose Perez (game-high 27 points), Samir Stewart (15 points), and Warren Williams (11 points) combine to score 53 of the Jaspers’ points.

Quinnipiac earned a comeback road victory over Rider, winning 77-70 in overtime on Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium. The Bobcats outscored the Broncs 9-2 over the final 1:37 of the extra period leading to the Bobcat’s first ever program win at Alumni Gym. Jacob Rigoni and Matt Balanc each scored 17 points to lead the Bobcats scoring attack. Rider, which trailed for less than five total minutes in the overtime bout, led by as many as 12 points in the first half. The Broncs had four players in double figures, with Allen Powell and Mervin James scoring 17 points apiece, while Dimencio Vaughn and Jeremiah Pope each scored 13 points.

Saint Peter’s held off Monmouth’s comeback attempt, picking up a 67-62 home win at Run Baby Run Arena on Friday night in a battle between two teams that had layoffs of 27 and 23 days, respectively. The Peacocks had 10 players score at least two points, with Daryl Banks III leading the way with 13 points and KC Ndefo scoring 12 points. The Hawks erased an 11-point second half deficit pulling within one possession multiple times, before ultimately suffering their first MAAC defeat of the season. Four Hawks scored above double digits with George Papas leading the way with a game-high 16-points, while Shavar Reynolds (11), Myles Foster (10), and Walker Miller (10) followed.

Siena knocked off rival Marist, 67-60, on the road at McCann Arena on Friday night, capping off the program’s largest comeback victory in over a decade. The Saints, trailed by as many as 18 points, including a 17-point deficit with 12:28 to play before putting together a decisive 34-10 game-ending run to pull off the win. Colby Rogers scored a team-high 16 points off the bench, while Anthony Gaines scored 13 points, and the duo of Jared Billups and Aidan Carpenter each chipped in with 11 points. The Red Foxes had a trio of double figure scorers led by Jao Ituka’s game-high 20 points, followed by 17 points from Ricardo Wright and 10 points by Jordan Jones.
