Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Quinnipiac, and Saint Peter’s Win on Sunday in MAAC Men’s Basketball

EDISON, NJ (Jan. 17, 2022) – Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball league action continued on Sunday with five games. Iona remained perfect in MAAC play with another dominating performance, Marist set a program record for margin of victory, while Manhattan, Quinnipiac and Saint Peter’s held on for close victories.

Iona never trailed in Sunday’s 78-55 win over Niagara at the Hynes Center. The victory was the second straight wire-to-wire win for the Gaels as they improved to a perfect 6-0 in league play and 7-0 at home. Tyson Jolly led another balanced scoring attack for Iona with 17 points, followed by 10 points each from Berrick JeanLouis, Quinn Slazinski, and Ryan Myers. MAAC leading scorer Marcus Hammond led Niagara with 17 points while Noah Thomasson added 11 points.
 
Manhattan (9-4, 2-2 MAAC) – 80 | Canisius (5-11, 1-4 MAAC) – 75

Manhattan held off Canisius’ late push, preserving an 80-75 win in Draddy Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. The Jaspers led by as many as 21 points in the second half before the Golden Griffins were able to cut the deficit to two points on multiple occasions inside the final minutes. Jose Perez scored a season-high 33 points to lead Manhattan, while Samir Stewart and Elijah Buchanan scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Ahamadou Fofana (15), Akrum Ahemed (13), and Malek Green (12) paced the Griffs offense.
 
Marist (8-8, 3-4 MAAC) – 84 | Monmouth (10-5, 2-2 MAAC) – 48

Marist defeated Monmouth, 84-48, on Sunday afternoon in McCann Arena. The 36-point margin of victory set a Marist program record in MAAC play and was the most by a Marist team overall since a 38-point win over VMI in 2013. Four players on Marist scored in double digits, Jao Ituka (28), Ricardo Wright (24), Samkelo Cele (13) and Javon Cooley (10). Monmouth was led by Myles Ruth’s 11 points and Shavar Reynolds added 10 points.
 
Quinnipiac (9-6, 4-3 MAAC) – 72 | Fairfield (8-9, 2-4 MAAC) – 66

Quinnipiac edged in-state rival Fairfield, 72-66 on Sunday inside the People’s United Center. The Bobcats scored more than half their points in the paint, accounting for 46 points in the restricted area. Kevin Marfo posted a team-high 16 points, Tymu Chenery added 13 points and five rebounds, and Brendan McGuire chipped in with 10 points. A trio of Stags scored in double figures led by Supreme Cook’s fifth double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and pulling in 11 rebounds, while Taj Benning scored 12 points and Jake Wojcik scored 12 points.
 
Saint Peter’s (5-6, 3-1 MAAC) – 58 | Rider (5-10, 1-4 MAAC) – 51

Saint Peter’s took down rival Rider in a defensive battle, 58-51 on Sunday in Lawrenceville. The Peacocks recorded a season-high 13 thefts and forced 19 turnovers leading to the win. Doug Edert led Saint Peter’s with 12 points while nine total Peacocks scored at least two points. Rider’s Dimencio Vaughn recorded his fourth double-double scoring a game-high 16 points and hauling in 10 rebounds. Dwight Murray Jr., added 11 points and Ajiri Ogemuno-Johnson chipped in with 10 points.
