Jose Perez of Manhattan has been named Division I Men’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
The designation, for games played Jan. 10-16, is unique in that it encompasses players from 21 Met area Division I schools.
A 6-5 senior forward from the Bronx, NY, Perez --- who also was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player of the week --- averaged 28.8 points, 4.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week for the Jaspers (9-4). He nailed a highly efficient 19-of-22 free throws and shot 48.8% (20-of-41) from the field overall in an 88-76 loss at Iona and in an 80-75 win at home over Canisius.
Perez led all scorers with a season-high 27 points while adding five assists in the game against Iona.
He connected on 63.2% (12-of-19) of his field goal shots against Canisius in raising his season-high again with a game-leading 33 points while contributing three assists and two steals.
