Lenaejha Evans of Rider has been named Division I Women’s Player of the Week by the Met Basketball Writers Association.
The designation, for games played Jan. 10-16, is unique in that it encompasses players from 21 Met area schools across Division I.
A 5-8 senior guard from Conway, SC, Evans --- who also was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player of the week --- led the Broncs (5-10) to a two-game sweep on their annual trip to Western New York. In toppling Canisius 59-51 and then pasting Niagara 92-70, she averaged 23.5 points on 59.4% shooting (19-of-32) from the field along with 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals.
Against Canisius, Evans led all scorers with 17 points and contributed a career-high nine assists.
Evans soared against Niagara by producing a career-high 30 points on 12-of-15 shooting to go with three steals and two rebounds. She became the 14th different player in Rider women’s history to score 30 or more points while her total was the second-highest in a single game by a MAAC player this season.
