Fairfield, Manhattan, Monmouth, Niagara, Quinnipiac Victorious on Thursday Night in Women’s MAAC Hoops Action

EDISON, NJ (January 28, 2022) – Fairfield won their MAAC-leading ninth game, Manhattan came storming back to win a nail-biter, Monmouth continues to stay hot, Niagara cooled down a blistering Siena squad, and Quinnipiac moved into sole possession of third place with their win over Canisius.

The Fairfield University women’s basketball team improved their conference record to 9-1 after defeating Marist, 59-39 on Thursday evening. Lou Lopez-Senechal scored a game-high 20 points and Andrea Hernangomez recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Zaria Shazer was the lone Red Fox to record double-digits with 11 points and nine rebounds.

After being down by eight at the start of the fourth quarter, Manhattan stormed back to defeat Iona, 71-69. Sini Makela found Brazil Harvey-Carr for a short jumper to net the game-winner for the Jaspers. Courtney Warley registered her MAAC-leading eighth double-double of the season with 11 points and 15 rebounds while Dee Dee Davis scored a game-high 25 points. Sydney Watkins finished with 15 points and Harvey-Carr added 11 points in the victory. For the Gaels, Olivia Vezaldenos scored 23 points, Ketsis Athias finished with 18 points and Shyan Mwai added 16 points.

Mackenzie DeWees double-double pushed the Quinnipiac women’s basketball team over Canisius on Thursday night, 62-53. DeWees finished with a game-high 17 points and 10 rebounds. Amani Free registered 14 points and Mikala Morris added 10 for the Bobcats. For the Griffs, Dani Haskell scored a team-high 16 points and Athina Lexa added 10 points. Cheyenne Stubbs recorded eight steals, the most by a Canisius player since Brittané Russell had nine swipes against Colgate on Nov. 12, 2007. Rhay Porter’s five blocks tied Canisius’ Division I freshman record for blocks in a contest.

The Monmouth women's basketball team secured a bounce-back victory after defeating Rider, 63-53, at OceanFirst Bank Center on Thursday night. Stella Clark led the Hawks with 18 points and Belle Krnbuhl scored 12 points while recording a season-high seven blocks. Ariana Vanderhoop added 11 points in the victory. Jessika Schiffer was the lone Bronc to score in double-figures with 11 points.

The Niagara University women’s basketball team snapped Siena’s five-game win streak, taking the Thursday evening contest, 82-69 at the Gallagher Center. The Purple Eagles had key offensive performances from Angel Parker who scored a game-high 23 points and added three rebounds, four assists, and seven steals. Aaliyah Parker finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and five steals in her first career start while Ally Haar added 16 points. For the Saints, Rayshel Brown and Margo Peterson led the scoring with 21 points each.
