Iona, Marist Earn Road Wins to Remain Tied for Second in MAAC Volleyball Conference Standings after Mid-Week Action

The Iona University Volleyball program earned their fifth straight victory after defeating Saint Peter's (20-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-13) on the road on Wednesday evening. Leading the defensive efforts, Hope Matschner poured in a match-high 28 digs, helping the Gaels improve to 11-6 and 6-1 in MAAC play, equaling they're best start in conference play since 2018. Jen Soto and Elana Bianchi each recorded match-highs 11 kills and Greta Stjade finished with eight kills. Morgan Madasz (5) Nerin Valasakos (4) and Emma Jacobs (4) rounded out the offensive attack. Tamara Pichardo (23) and Samantha Juran (11) accounted for 34 of Iona's 46 assists in the win. Stjade (11) Pichardo (8) and Juran (5) all chipped in on the defensive side to go along with Matschner's match-best 28 digs.

The Marist volleyball team took down Quinnipiac in five sets on Wednesday at Quinnipiac, as the Red Foxes won their fourth straight. Marist battled back & forth with the Bobcats for control of the match trading sets. The Red Foxes were able to prevail by scores of 25-22, 21-25, 25-14, 21-25, 15-10. Marist completed the regular-season sweep of Quinnipiac, and now stands at 10-7 overall and 6-1 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes got off to a hot start winning the first set by a score of 25-22 where the 16 kills were tallied for Marist. In set two the Red Foxes battled back and forth with the Bobcats for the lead; however, Quinnipiac was able to win the set by a score of 25-21. Set three saw Jordan Newblatt and Sasha van der Merwe getting it done for the Red Foxes as Marist won set three by a score of 25-14. Newblatt had six kills in the set, while van der Merwe had five kills and a block. Set four saw Quinnipiac getting an early lead on the Red Foxes as the Bobcats won 25-21 and tied up the match 2-2. The fifth set saw the Red Foxes & Bobcats juggle for the lead the Red Foxes were able to cap off the five-set victory, winning the fifth set with a score of 15-10. It was a great all-around match for Gabrielle Heller, who had a match-high 23 kills plus 15 digs and hit .370. Newblatt finished with 22 kills and 16 digs, while van der Merwe had 18 kills and 12 digs. McKinley Fox led both teams with 56 assists.

Manhattan fell in straight sets at St. Francis Brooklyn on Wednesday night. It was the non-conference finale for the Jaspers and the second meeting between the two teams this season. Offensively, Manhattan was led by Camila Gomez with 16 kills, a season-best. Gomez's previous best was nine, which came in the first meeting with St. Francis Brooklyn. Sarah Emmons had 15 assists for the Jaspers. The Jaspers led early in set one, 5-3, 8-6, and 10-9. A kill from Gomez and a St. Francis Brooklyn gave Manhattan the 10-9 lead. The Terriers would score the next seven points to take a 16-10 lead. It would be as close as the remainder of the set would be. Kills from Ananda Burgos and Teresa Garza got the Jaspers back level at 5-5 early on in set two. Nine of the following 10 points went to the Terriers as their lead grew to 14-6. St. Francis Brooklyn would go to win the set 25-11. The final set was close in the early stages. The lead was no larger than three over the first 10 points. The Terriers built an 11-5 lead before the Jaspers trimmed it to three with a three-point spurt. St. Francis Brooklyn would then extend the lead back out to six, not letting Manhattan get any closer.
 
The 2022 MAAC Volleyball Championship takes place from November 16 through 19 at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, FL. The 10-team, single-elimination championship will feature four rounds of action with the opening round taking place on Wednesday, November 16, followed by the quarterfinals on Thursday, November 17, the semifinals on Friday, November 18, and concluding with the championship match on Saturday, November 19.
