Siena, Iona, and Niagara Remain Unbeaten; Rider Collects First Win to Recap MAAC Men’s Soccer Weekend Action

EDISON, NJ (Oct. 10, 2022) – Siena College regained sole possession of first-place with its win, while Iona University and Niagara University each remained unbeaten in league play following a win and draw, respectively, to highlight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s soccer weekend action.

Iona earned a come from behind home victory over Manhattan, winning 2-1 in MAAC men's soccer action. The Gaels remain unbeaten in conference play and at home on the season, while the defeat for the Jaspers was the first in MAAC action for the team on the year. Manhattan got on the board first by way of a penalty kick goal from Henry Hamilton. Iona would score the equalizer in the 33rd minute by way of Nathaniel David and the game-winner in the 61st minute coming from Federico Russo.

Rider men's soccer defeated Fairfield, 3-2, on the road Saturday night in Connecticut, earning its first MAAC victory of the season. The Broncs scored a pair of goals in the first half, with Guillaume Sarrabayrouse (10’) and Lenny Cidolit (29’), each scoring. Fairfield would respond with two goals of its own, both coming from Alex Oliveira in the 58th and 78th minutes to tie the match. The game-winning goal would come late in minute 86, by way of a header from Regis Dulck.

Siena kept its MAAC unbeaten streak intact with a 2-1 victory over Marist at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field in Poughkeepsie, New York. The win pushed the Saints into first place on the conference standings. In the 24th minute, Jacob Schulman scored off the penalty kick for Marist. In a span of one minute and eight seconds, Siena’s Thomas Storodegard scored the game-tying and game-winning goals, in the 76th and 77th minutes.

Canisius and Saint Peter’s played to a scoreless draw on Saturday afternoon in MAAC men's soccer action at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, NJ. The draw was the second straight tie for the Golden Griffins in league play, while it was the first draw and MAAC point of the season for the Peacocks. Guillem Badenes Mecho made five saves for Saint Peter’s and William Howard made three saves for Canisius. Offensively, Jonny Tekie led Canisius with four shots and Reiss Skeen was Saint Peter’s leader with three shots.

Mount St. Mary's and Niagara played to a 2-2 draw Saturday afternoon in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The tie gave both teams 1 point, putting each side in a four-way tie for second place in the MAAC standings. The two sides alternated goals with Niagara’s goals being scored by Gabriel Mikina (13’) and Rodrigo Almeida (40’), and the Mount’s tallies coming from Ethan Glaser (25’) and Jesus Salazar (71’).
 
The 2022 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship will take place from November 6 through 13. The six-team, single-elimination championship will be hosted by the higher seed of each match. The opening round will take place on Sunday, November 6, followed by the semifinals on Thursday, November 10, and concluding with the championship match on Sunday, November 13.
