Quinnipiac Jumps to 5-0; Iona, Manhattan, and Niagara Victorious in MAAC Men’s Basketball on Friday

EDISON, NJ (Nov. 19, 2022) – Four Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball teams were victorious on Friday in non-conference action, headlined by Quinnipiac University winning its fifth straight contest to remain undefeated. Also earning wins on Friday were Iona University, Manhattan College and Niagara University.

Iona University men's basketball picked up an impressive 71-50 win over America East Conference favorite Vermont at the 2022 Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase at Mohegan Sun Arena. Iona never trailed in the wire-to-wire victory, improving to 2-1. Senior Berrick JeanLouis poured in a career-high 23 points and junior Daniss Jenkins added 20 to lead the Gaels.

Manhattan throttled Mount St. Vincent on Friday night with an 86-39 win in Draddy Gym. Manhattan led from start to finish, with interim head coach RaShawn Stores, picking up his first career win. The Jaspers scored 56 points in the opening half, with 27 coming off 3-pointers. Ant Nelson led the way with 18 points, while Josh Roberts and Elijah Buchanan scored 14 points apiece.

Niagara defeated Central Arkansas, 73-64 in Dublin, Ireland at the National Basketball Arena on the first day of the MAAC/ASUN Challenge. The Purple Eagles held the Bears to 35.9 percent from the field, while shooting 54.7 percent from the floor themselves en route to their first win of the young season. Senior Noah Thomasson dropped a career-high 29 points on 12-for-18 shooting to lead the Purple Eagles.

Quinnipiac men's basketball cruised past Albertus Magnus by the final score of 86-68 on Friday afternoon at M&T Bank Arena, improving to 5-0 to begin the 2022-23 campaign. The Bobcats move to 5-0 for the first time since 1969-70. Matt Balanc led the way for the Bobcats, posting 22 points on 7-for-7 shooting. Luis Kortright (15), Jamil Riggins (12), and Paul Otieno (10) were also in double figures in the win.

Fairfield University men's basketball fell to host Wagner on Friday evening, 68-52. The Stags were led offensively by Caleb Fields with a team-best 16 points and Supreme Cook was just one rebound shy of a double-double for the Stags with 14 points and nine rebounds.

USC was able to hold off a late rally for an 83-74 win over Mount St. Mary's at the Galen Center on Friday night. Trailing by 17 points late in the second half, the Mount rallied to cut the deficit to seven, but ran out of time as USC held on for the nine-point win in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. Dakota Leffew scored a career-high 21 points while Malik Jefferson added a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The Rider University men's basketball team fell to Stetson, 78-68, on the opening day of the MAAC/ASUN Dublin Basketball Classic Friday morning. Dwight Murray, Jr. (Austell, GA/Pebblebrook [North Alabama]) scored a game-high 17 points. Joining Murray in double figures were Tariq Ingraham (12), Mervin James (11), and Allen Betrand (11).
