Fairfield, Saint Peter’s, and Siena Closes out Thanksgiving Weekend Competition with Wins for MAAC Men’s Basketball

EDISON, NJ (Nov. 28, 2022) – Fairfield University, Saint Peter’s University, and Siena College closed the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend in the win column to headline Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball action. The Stags topped Evansville in the finale at the Hostilo Hoops Community Classic, the Peacocks earned a home win over FDU, and the Saints finished in third-place at the ESPN Events Invitational with a victory over Seton Hall.

Fairfield University men's basketball rallied to knock off Evansville, 63-56, in Sunday's finale at the Hostilo Hoops Community Classic in Savannah, GA. The Stags faced a 40-31 deficit early in the second half but only conceded 16 points over the final 14 minutes while netting 32 of their own, to earn their second victory of the season. Caleb Fields scored 12 of his season-high 21 points during the comeback to lead Fairfield, while Allan Jeanne-Rose and TJ Long both chipped in with 12 points each in the win.

Saint Peter's University men's basketball defeated in-state rival Fairleigh Dickinson, 77-63 on Sunday in Jersey City. The win was the second straight for the Peacocks as the team improved to a perfect 4-0 at home this season. All 11 players who stepped on the court scored at least two points in the win, with three surpassing double-figures. Jaylen Murray scored a game-high 18 points, Latrell Reid followed with 11 points and Isiah Dasher chipped in with 10 points.

Siena men’s basketball capped off Thanksgiving Weekend with its second high-major win in four days, following a 60-55 triumph over Seton Hall in the Third Place Game at the ESPN Events Invitational. The Saints secured their first victory over a Big East program in 19 years, its second high-major win of the tournament including the team’s victory over Florida State on Thanksgiving. It’s the first time Siena has achieved multiple high-major wins in the same season since 2007-08. The Saints used a balanced attack with Javian McCollum leading the team with 14 points. Jayce Johnson (11), Jackson Stormo (11), and Michael Eley (10) also scored in double figures.

The Iona University men's basketball team fell to Santa Clara, 86-76, in the showcase game of the 2022 Las Vegas Holiday Showcase at Orleans Arena. Iona gave up a late run which led to the setback, dropping the Gaels to 2-2 on the season. Sophomore Walter Clayton Jr. set a career-high with 26 points and six three-point field goals to lead the Gaels. Daniss Jenkins (16) and Michael Jefferson (12) followed in double-digit scoring for Iona.

Quinnipiac men's basketball dropped its first contest of the season on Sunday at Place Bell Arena in Canada, falling to Hofstra by the final score of 72-70 at The Northern Classic. The Bobcats suffer their first loss of the 2022-23 season, moving to 7-1 on the year, the program's best start to a season since 1969-70. Dezi Jones recorded 18 points, six rebounds and three assists, Tyrese Williams chipped in with 14 points and three rebounds, and Luis Kortright added 10 points in the game.
