EDISON, NJ (Nov. 8, 2022) – The 2022-23 campaign officially tipped off on Monday night with four out of the nine Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball teams in action securing wins. Highlighting the teams to start the new season 1-0 were both Iona University and Saint Peter’s University which earned blowout home wins, while Quinnipiac University and Siena College snagged road victories.

The Iona University men's basketball team earned a 78-50 win over Ivy League favorite Penn in its season opener at the Hynes Center Monday night in front of a sold out crowd. All five Gael starters scored at least nine points led by 19 from junior Daniss Jenkins. Senior Quinn Slazinski added 16 points, junior Nelly Junior Joseph posted a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double, and Walter Clayton Jr. added nine points with four rebounds, seven assists, two steals and zero turnovers.

Luis Kortright's led a trio of Bobcats in double-figures, scoring a game-high 15 points and five steals, while graduate student forward Ike Nweke tallied a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds in his Quinnipiac debut, and Dezi Jones contributed 12 points.

A contest that the Peacocks never trailed in, SPU opened the game on a 17-0 run and never looked back. The Saints used a 17-3 run late in the first half, taking a lead as large as 17 points before the break, a lead that the team would never squander. Javian McCollum paced the Saints with his first collegiate 20-point game while adding five assists and Eduardo Lane posted his first career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds in his Siena debut.
