MAAC Women’s Basketball Starts off 2022-23 Season with Three Opening Day Wins

EDISON, NJ (Nov. 8, 2022) – The 2022-23 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s basketball regular season tipped off   Monday, November 7. On a day when nine out of eleven MAAC teams saw action, Canisius, Fairfield, and Niagara all took home opening day wins. The final MAAC teams to start their seasons, Iona, and Siena, will both begin competition on Thursday, November 10, with home games against Wagner and University of New Hampshire.

Canisius College started off the season defeating crosstown rival Buffalo by a two-point margin, in a come from behind victory. Dani Haskell led Canisius with 17 points and Sis Eleko added in 10 points and six rebounds on the night.

Fairfield came out with the double-digit win in its season opener against Brown 62-52. Callie Cavanaugh poured in a career high 36 points, including 10 straight points in the fourth quarter to lead Fairfield to victory. This win marks the first career victory for first year head coach Carly Thibault- DuDonis.

Led by Aaliyah and Angel Parker’s combined 31 points, Niagara earned a 64-55 victory over Loyola (Md.).  For Niagara, Aaliyah Parker led with 17 points and five rebounds, Angel Parker added in 14 points, five rebounds with two assists, and Maddy Yelle chipped in with 12 points, three assists and two steals.

Manhattan fell to Wagner in its season opener by a score of 63-60. The Jaspers were ed by Emily LaPointe’s 18 points and seven rebounds. Pre-season MAAC Player of the Year Dee Dee Davis filled the stat sheet with 17 points, nine rebounds, four steals, and three assists.
