Iona and Niagara Use Late Runs to Secure Wins in MAAC Men’s Basketball Non-Conference Play on Sunday

EDISON, NJ (Dec. 12, 2022) – Iona University and Niagara University each used late runs during the second halves of their respective non-conference games, leading to victories on Sunday for Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball. The Gaels handled A10 foe St. Bonaventure in the 2022 Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational at the Barclays Center, while the Purple Eagles edged Eastern Michigan of the MAC at home.

The Iona men's basketball team pulled away late in a 72-57 win over St. Bonaventure in non-conference action at the 2022 Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational at the Barclays Center. Trailing by one with 7:41 remaining, the Gaels ratcheted up the full court pressure and ended the contest on a 19-3 run to earn their second straight convincing victory over a top-tier Atlantic 10 opponent. The win was the fourth straight for Iona, as the team improved to a perfect 4-0 in the month of December, winning its December contests by an average of 22.25 points. Nelly Junior Joseph led all scorers with 24 points and posted a double-double with 10 rebounds, while Walter Clayton Jr. added 16 points and Daniss Jenkins contributed 11 points.

Niagara used a late 7-0 run to defeat visiting Eastern Michigan, 67-60, on Sunday afternoon in non-conference men's basketball action from the Gallagher Center. The Purple Eagles have gone 5-2 over their last seven games and shot 50.0 percent from the field and 73.3 percent at the line in the win on Sunday. Three Purple Eagles finished with double-digit scoring days, led by Noah Thomasson who finished with a team-best 20 points, followed by 12 points from Aaron Gray and 11 from David Mitchell.

The Jaspers had four players in double figures in the high scoring affair, led by a career-high 35 points from Samir Stewart. Siena men’s basketball fell at CAA defending champion Delaware, 75-64, on Sunday at the Bob Carpenter Center. Jayce Johnson scored a career-high 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting to lead the Saints, while Jackson Stormo finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks, and Andrew Platek chipped in 12 points.
