Rider Jumps to 2-0 in League Play; Siena Tops American in Non-Conference Action to Recap Thursday’s MAAC Men’s Basketball

EDISON, NJ (Dec. 23, 2022) – Rider University and Siena College were victorious on Thursday to headline Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball action. The Broncs defeated Marist in league play to improve to 2-0 and move into a three-way tie for first-place. The Saints edged red-hot American in non-conference action, recording the program’s first out of conference winning record in seven years.

Rider took a 77-71 win over Marist Thursday night at Alumni Gym in MAAC men’s basketball action. The Broncs have won four of their last five games and improve to 2-0 in league play, while the Red Foxes slip to 0-2 in the MAAC. Rider controlled the meeting, holding the lead for 35:50 in the home win compared to Marist only leading for just 36 seconds. Three Broncs scored in double-figures, led by a team-high 19 points from Allen Betrand on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor. Dwight Murray, Jr. followed with 17 points and Mervin James added 13 points. Marist was led by        Patrick Gardner who scored a game-high 21 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and had a game-high four assists, while Noah Harris chipped in with 13 points and Kam Farris added 12 points.

Siena edged American, 64-61, in out of conference action at Bender Arena on Thursday, securing the program’s first winning non-conference slate in seven years, improving to 7-5 overall following the win. The Saints led for 38 minutes and by as many as 13 points, snapping American’s eight-game winning streak. Michael Eley scored a season-high tying 16 points to lead Siena, followed by Jayce Johnson’s 14 points and decisive three in the waning seconds of the game. Jackson Stormo contributed 14 points and Jared Billups rounded out four double figure scorers with 10 points.

Iona men's basketball dropped an 85-81 decision to SMU in its opening contest at the 2022 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center. A trio of Gaels surpassed double digits, with sophomore Walter Clayton Jr. (22) and juniors Nelly Junior Joseph (20) and Daniss Jenkins (18) accounted for 60 of the Gaels 81 points in the setback. Iona falls to 7-4 overall on the season.

Quinnipiac men's basketball battled on the road on Thursday evening, falling at Penn State by the final score of 77-68 from the Bryce Jordan Center. Tyrese Williams led Quinnipiac with 16 points, knocking down four 3-pointers and becoming the 44th player in Quinnipiac program history to reach 1,000 career points - 18th Bobcat to reach the mark at the Division I level. Tymu Chenery added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists and Ike Nweke chipped in with 12 points.

Saint Peter’s dropped an out of conference meeting at Maryland, 75-45 on Thursday. The Peacocks were led by Corey Washington’s 10 points and nine rebounds in the defeat as the team drops to 6-6 overall on the season.
