Women’s MAAC Hoops Thursday Night Headlined by Fairfield’s Co-Share of Regular Season Title

EDISON, NJ (February 18, 2022) – Fairfield clinched a share of the MAAC Regular Season title last night, Brian Giorgis collected his 450th career win at the helm for Marist, Manhattan won their 10th game at home, Rider took down in-state rival Monmouth, and Niagara won their fifth-straight contest.

Manhattan won its third straight and picked up its 10th win at home after beating Canisius, 86-62, on Thursday night. Courtney Warley led the way for the Jaspers with 19 points and eight rebounds, Brazil Harvey-Carr finished with 18 points, Dee Dee Davis finished with 16 points, and Jade Blagrove scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Dani Haskell led the way for the Griffs with a game-high 21 points.

The Rider University women’s basketball team defeated Monmouth University on Thursday night, 51-41. The Broncs were led by a pair of double-digit scorers in Lenaejha Evans who finished with 16 points and Makayla Firebaugh who scored 14 points. Rapahela Toussaint grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. For the Hawks, Stella Clark was the lone scorer to post double digits as she finished with 11 points.

Aaliyah Parker led the way for Niagara Thursday night, going 9-for-13 from the field for a total of 21 points in the Purple Eagles 59-45 win over Iona.. The freshman added five rebounds and three steals in the win. Angel Parker (13), Olivia Mason (12), and Ally Haar (10) also recorded double-digit scoring numbers. Olivia Vezaldenos led the way for the Gaels with 13 points.

The biggest game of the year certainly lived up to its billing. Rachel Hakes drew an offensive foul and then sunk the two clinching free throws to give the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team a 59-54 overtime victory over the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Thursday night. The victory was the eighth-straight win for the Stags and clinched at least a share of the regular season title, the fourth in program history and the first since the 2000-01 season. Callie Cavanaugh scored a team-high 17 points for the Stags, Andrea Hernangomez added 11 points and Hakes contributed 10 points. Mikala Morris (18 points, 20 rebounds) and Mackenzie DeWees (10 points, 10 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles for the Bobcats.

Marist Head Coach Brian Giorgis picked up his 450th career win in the Red Foxes’ 51-41 win over Saint Peter’s on Thursday night. Zaria Shazer led the Red Foxes with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Trinasia Kennedy finished with 12 points in the win. Kassondra Brown made a big impact for the Peacocks, posting a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double.
