NEW YORK, NY (Feb. 19, 2022) – Day one of the 2022 MAAC Men’s & Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships concluded with both Monmouth University’s men’s and women’s programs on top of the team leaderboards with 79 and 53 points, respectively.

17 student-athletes, competing in 11 different events, were crowned MAAC Champions on day one of the 2022 MAAC Men’s & Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Iona and Monmouth each earned four gold medals on the opening day to lead all schools.
The Gaels picked up their four event victories in distance races, winning three of them in record fashion. Jamie Dee crossed the finish line in 14:02.30 to win the men’s 5000 meter and Sophie Murphy won the women’s 5000 meter with a time of 16:29.28. Both Gaels distance medley relay teams also snagged gold, with the men’s foursome of Mael Gouyette, John Conroy, Nick Soldevere, and Ehab El-Sandali winning and the women’s quartet of Nadine Donegan, Bria Oatman, Grace Sparrow, and Gemma Nuttall victorious.
The Hawks garnered wins in all field events. Randy Showmaker earned Monmouth’s first gold medal of the night, winning his second straight men’s pole vault at the indoor championships with an event-best 4.90 meters. Claiming the MAAC Championship with a throw of 17.76 meters in the women’s weight throw was Alexis Uzoaru. The Hawks swept gold in the high jump, with Keven Kevelier (men) and Veronica Chainov (women) victorious.
Manhattan’s RJ Decker won the first gold medal of the championships, securing first-place in the men’s weight throw, with a throw of 19.47 meters.
Rider took home the final two golds, winning both first-place medals in the men’s and women’s long jumps, with Zach Manorowitz taking the men’s event and Mariah Stephens clinching the women’s event.

- Jamie Dee of Iona broke the men’s 5000 meter record with a finishing time of 14:02.30, breaking the previous record by five seconds (Kyle Mueller, Monmouth, 14:07.39, 2020)
- Sophie Murphy of Iona broke the women’s 5000 meter record with a time of 16:29.28, breaking the prior record by 13 seconds (Egle Morenaite, Iona, 16:42.95, 2020)
- Iona’s women’s relay team of Nadine Donegan, Bria Oatman, Grace Sparrow, and Gemma Nuttall broke the women’s distance medley relay record with a time 11:41.79, breaking the previous record by 3 seconds (Monmouth, 11:44.68, 2016)
