HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac University women's basketball team is set to take on the University of Rhode Island Rams on the road Friday, March 18 in round one action of the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). Tip-off from the Thomas M. Ryan Center is set for 6 p.m.
Earning a berth as an automatic qualifier, Quinnipiac is in the WNIT field for the fifth time in program history. Making appearances in 2008, 2012, 2014 and 2016, it wasn't until Qunnipiac's last WNIT appearance where the Bobcats earned its first ever national postseason tournament victory in defeating Maine, 90-44, in the WNIT First Round at the People's United Center on March 18, 2016.
Friday's contest will be just the fifth meeting in the series history, as Quinnipiac owns a 4-0 record all-time against URI. The last time the two programs clashed, the Bobcats came away with a 75-63 victory over the Rams at the People's United Center on Dec. 21, 2019. Mikala Morris led the charge in the victory with 16 points and 16 rebounds.
Boasting a 22-6 record on the season, the Rams wrapped up Atlantic-10 play with a 12-2 mark to earn the second-overall seed for the A-10 Tournament. In 2021-22, URI owns impressive wins in defeating Providence (66-53), Princeton (61-53) and Virginia (80-70).
The Rams went 12-1 at home this season and 10-4 away from Kingston. Since the start of last season, URI owns an overall mark of 33-14 (.702). The Rams are deep, as they had three players earn All-Conference honors. Redshirt senior Emmanuelle Tahane earned a spot on the First Team for the second straight year while grad senior Dez Elmore and redshirt junior Marie-Paule Foppossi both were named to the Third Team. Tahane leads the team in scoring (13.9), rebounding (8.8) and field-goal percentage (55.6%).
