Iona Golf Alumnus Dylan Newman Qualifies for the 2022 PGA Championship

AUSTIN, TX - Iona alumnus Dylan Newman will be the first Iona golfer to compete in a PGA major after qualifying for the PGA Championship at the 2022 PGA Professional Championship hosted at Fazio Foothills in Austin, Texas. Newman tied for 11th place in the 72-hole event.

A strong first two rounds by Newman secured him a spot inside the cut line. He turned in a round one 68 and then shot two strokes better on day two with a 66. A birdie on the last hole of round four kept the former Gael under par at -1 for the event. The PGA Championship will take place on May 19-22 at the Southern Hills Championship Course in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Dylan Newman came to Iona as a New Rochelle native and left as one of the most skilled golfers in program history. In 2010 he was named the MAAC Rookie of the Year, shooting a 228 (+12) and tying for eighth place at the MAAC Championships. That season he also picked up his first career win at the Peacock Invitational.

As a sophomore, he placed 10th at the MAAC Championships with a 231 (+15) and earned Northeast Division I PING All-Region Team selection. He had three top-10 finishes in the 2010-11 season.

Come his junior campaign, Newman raised his bar and put together a season that culminated in a second-place finish at the MAAC Championship with a one-under 215 total score. He had four top-10 finishes throughout the year.

Newman would tie his 215 (-1) MAAC Championship score in 2013, which placed him third in the standings. Both his junior and senior year championship performances are tied for 10th best in a three-round MAAC Championship series. Newman has the second-best individual championship performance ever, trailing only his teammate Doug Hoppe's event-winning 213 (-3). Iona finished second place as a team in 2013, falling by just one stroke to Loyola.

Following graduation, Newman has continued to play golf locally. He was named the MET PGA Player of the Year in 2017 with one first place finish, three second place finishes, and six total top-tens. In December of 2019, Newman captured his first win in a PGA Tournament Series event at the Event No. 1 at PGA Golf Club and then took Event No. 2 to make it a sweep.
