Wagner Water Polo Draws Salem University In NCAA Tournament Opening Round

Staten Island, NY – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular season and tournament champions will head to Ann Arbor, MI to take on Salem University in the NCAA opening-round game on Wednesday May 4, the NCAA announced on Monday evening.

The Seahawks captured its seventh MAAC title in the last nine seasons with a convincing 18-7 victory over LIU on Sunday, April 24. For Wagner, it is a conference-best 10th championship. Wagner wrapped up the 2022 season with a program-best 34-3 record, 34 victories is the most in a single season in program history as the 2019 Seahawks claimed 30 victories. With the victory in the MAAC title game, Wagner claimed its 17th consecutive victory, tied for the most in a row with the 2018 and 2019 Seahawks.
 

Out of the Western Water Polo Association, Salem ended the season with an 18-15 overall record and defeated California State East Bay 11-10 in sudden death overtime in the conference tournament on Sunday, April 24. The winner of the opening-round game will take on the top overall seed Stanford University.

Rounding out the NCAA tournament bracket is UCLA, UC Irvine, USC, Fresno State, California, and the hosts Michigan.

The first round and semifinal games will be streamed on NCAA.com on May 6 and 7. The national championship will take place at 4:00 P.M. EST on Sunday, May 8 on ESPNU.
