Siena's Fontenelle-Posson to Represent USA at 2022 Deaflympics

Saints Rising Sophomore to Play for Team USA in Brazil

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Women's Basketball rising sophomore Valencia Fontenelle-Posson has been selected to represent the United States at the 2022 Deaflympics held in Caxias do Sul, Brazil from May 1-15. Fontenelle-Posson will debut for Team USA beginning on Wednesday, May 4.

Fontenelle-Posson developed hearing loss, known as hard of hearing, at a young age. After surgeries, she began to use a coachial hearing device – mostly in her right ear – to only take in some information at a time, but not all. Due to her condition, the Altamont, New York native was picked to represent the United States in women's basketball for the upcoming Deaflympic games. Team USA will play their first game on Wednesday, May 4 against Lithuania in group play. Team USA will also face Kenya on May 6, and Turkey on May 8 to round out group play.

Fonenelle-Posson appeared in 27 games for the Saints in a successful freshman campaign, making seven starts. She averaged 4.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 0.3 assists per game. She was one of the top Saints from the free throw line, converting just north of 70 percent of shots from the charity stripe. She helped the Saints to a 10-19 overall record, and 10-10 mark in the MAAC. The Saints were picked to finish ninth in the league, and ended up fifth and with a first round bye in the MAAC Tournament. Siena's 10 conference wins were the most since an 11-win campaign in 2017-18.
