Manhattan, Marist, and Siena Earn Shutout Wins on Opening Day in Men’s Soccer

EDISON, NJ (Aug. 26, 2022) – Manhattan, Marist, and Siena each posted clean sheet victories, while Saint Peter’s picked up a draw to highlight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s soccer on opening day.

Manhattan got the 2022 MAAC men's soccer season underway in dominating fashion, as the first team to compete on Thursday, recording a 2-0 win over Holy Cross. Jaspers’ newcomer Gunnar Studenhofft struck first, scoring off a pass from captain James Cotter in the 38th minute. The duo would connect again in the 82nd minute when Studenhofft broke through the Crusaders' backline and beat the keeper on the opposite post, right-to-left, off another pass from Cotter. Danny DiMarco got the starting nod in net, playing all 90 minutes and recording his sixth career clean sheet while recording four saves.

The Marist men's soccer team took down Howard by a final score of 2-0 on Thursday afternoon, securing their first win of the season. Andre Cutler-Dejesus was able to find the back of the net for the Red Foxes in the 36th minute, breaking the tie and scoring Marist's first goal of the season. In the 68th minute, Henrique Cruz netted hit first goal of the season, giving the Red Foxes a 2-0 advantage. Marist led Howard in shots (9-3) and shots on goal (7-2) and also had the advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon (8-3). Reigning MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year, Samuel Ilin, posted his first shut-out of the season.

For the eighth straight meeting and second straight season, Siena emerged without a loss against Sacred Heart, opening the regular season with a 1-0 shutout performance Thursday evening at Park Ave Field in Fairfield, Connecticut. The Saints strung together the deciding score in the 21st minute of play, with sophomore Preseason All-MAAC selection Erik Reis serving a ball from left-to-right to classmate Jesper Schone Vogtengen, who found junior Bilal Hersi in the left corner of the box for the finish. Graduate student goalkeeper Greg Monroe made three stops in goal, picking up his 21st career win, which placed him in a tie for most wins all-time by a Siena keeper.

The Saint Peter's University men's soccer team tied VMI, 2-2 on Thursday afternoon, with both Peacock tallies coming from underclassmen. After falling behind by a goal, Saint Peter's answered with a penalty of their own, as freshman midfielder Reiss Skeen drew and scored a penalty in the 37th minute to tie the game at one. VMI would go ahead 2-1, but after multiple shot attempts, the Peacocks found the equalizer from sophomore forward Mikkel Fodstad in the 77th minute, who scored off a shot that came from outside the box. Saint Peter’s outshot VMI 20-7 and held a 6-3 shots on goal edge in the game.

The Niagara men's soccer team got goals from Federico Cugge and Rodrigo Almeida but fell to Saint Mary's 3-2 Thursday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action. Federico Cugge found the lower right corner of the net following a corner from Stephen Hasse to even the score at 1-1 in the 46th minute. Three minutes later, Luigi Boa Morte found Rodrigo Almeida to give the Purple Eagles a 2-1 lead. Saint Mary's would tie the game in the 56th minute and score the game-winner in the 73rd.

Quinnipiac men's soccer dropped its 2022 season opener, 5-2, on Thursday afternoon on the road at Boston College. Noah Silverman and Jason Budhai each scored for the Bobcats. Silverman scored his first career goal 18 seconds into the match and new season. Budhai scored in the second half of action (76’), his third goal in the last two seasons.

Rider University men's soccer surrendered three first-half goals in a 3-0 season-opening loss at Seton Hall Thursday night. Rider senior goalkeeper Guillaume Veinante made seven saves in the game.
 
The 2022 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship will take place from November 6 through 13. The six-team, single-elimination championship will be hosted by the higher seed of each match. The opening round will take place on Sunday, November 6, followed by the semifinals on Thursday, November 10, and concluding with the championship match on Sunday, November 13.
