MAAC Men’s Soccer Goes Unbeaten on Labor Day with Wins by Marist, Mount St. Mary’s, and Niagara

EDISON, NJ (Sep. 6, 2022) – Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s soccer posted a combined 3-0-1 record on Labor Day, with wins coming from Marist College, Mount St. Mary’s University, and Niagara University, while Canisius College played to a draw.

The Marist men's soccer team took down UAlbany on a rainy Monday night in Poughkeepsie by a final score of 2-1. Marist got on the board first, scoring in the second minute when Jared Juleau passed it to Richard Morel, who found the back of the net to give Marist a 1-0 lead. In the 13th minute, Juleau took advantage of a keeper miscue, firing a shot from over 30-yards out. Juleau placed it perfectly in the bottom right of the net, giving Marist an early 2-0 advantage. Sam Ilin recorded three saves in net for the Red Foxes while the Marist improved to 2-0-1 on the season.

The Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers defeated the George Washington Colonials 2-1 in Washington, D.C. on Monday. Ruben Kiers scored both goals to lead the Mount with both coming from assists by Jesus Salazar. The first came early, with a header from the right side of the net during the ninth minute. After carrying the 1-0 advantage into the half, the duo repeated the process off a corner in the 51st minute. Goalkeeper Ethan Russell made five saves in the victory.

Freshmen Alberto Sanchez Cervera scored twice en route to a 3-2 win for Niagara over Stonehill on a rainy Monday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action from Niagara Field. Niagara opened the scoring in the 13th minute of play when a corner kick from Stephen Hasse found the head of Cervera and then the back of the net. 15-minutes later, Nuukele Gboe sent the ball into the box where Jayson Repine redirected toward Cervera who again found the back of the net with his head to give Niagara a 2-0 lead. Niagara’s final goal would come early in the second half (46th minute) when Rodrigo Almeida was fouled in the penalty area, leading to a penalty kick goal.

Graduate keeper William Howard made two saves to pace Canisius in a 0-0 draw versus Dartmouth in collegiate men's soccer action Monday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. The Golden Griffins were out-shot by the Big Green 9-4, but held the advantage in shots on target by a 3-2 margin.
 
The 2022 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship will take place from November 6 through 13. The six-team, single-elimination championship will be hosted by the higher seed of each match. The opening round will take place on Sunday, November 6, followed by the semifinals on Thursday, November 10, and concluding with the championship match on Sunday, November 13.
