EDISON, NJ (September 8, 2022) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) today officially announced the 2022-23 Women's Basketball conference schedule.
All 11 MAAC institutions will play a 20-game conference slate, seeing every opponent once at home and once on the road.
Conference play will begin on Saturday, Dec. 17, and run through Saturday, Mar. 4, with a nine-day winter break scheduled from Tuesday, Dec. 20 to Wednesday, Dec. 28.
The 2022-23 campaign will conclude with the 2023 Hercules Tires MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships from Mar. 7-11 in Atlantic City, NJ. The historic Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall will once again play host to the championships for the fourth-straight season. The conference tournament champion will earn the league's automatic bid to the 2023 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament.
Last season, Fairfield University claimed the 2022 MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship, their fourth MAAC title in program history, and first since 1998.
Highlights of the 2022-23 Schedule:
- 10 teams will open the conference schedule on Saturday, Dec. 17 as Canisius hosts Rider, Iona hosts Quinnipiac, Manhattan hosts MAAC newcomer Mount St. Mary’s, Niagara hosts Marist, and Saint Peter’s hosts Fairfield.
- In their first conference game of their inaugural season in the MAAC, Mount St. Mary’s will play Manhattan on Saturday, Dec. 17 as the 2021-22 NEC Tournament champion Mountaineers face the 2021-22 MAAC Tournament runner-up Jaspers in Riverdale, NY.
- Retiring at the conclusion of the 2022-23 campaign, Marist head coach Brian Giorgis will face none-other than his former assistant, Niagara head coach Jada Pierce, in the conference opener on Saturday, Dec. 17. Pierce was on Giorgis’ staff at Marist during 2006-07 season, when the Red Foxes reached the NCAA Sweet 16.
- Recent head coaching hires Carly Thibault-Dudonis (Fairfield) and Jennifer Leedham (Saint Peter’s) will face off in the season opener on Saturday, Dec. 17, when Leedham’s Peacocks host Thibault-Dudonis’ Stags in Jersey City, NJ.
- Rider swept Canisius in their pair of meetings last year, and the Broncs will open the conference schedule against the Griffs on Saturday, Dec. 17 in Buffalo, NY.
- Siena will open their season on Monday, Dec. 19 at Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, MD.
- Fairfield will now play their home games at the new On-Campus Arena. The Stags will host their first MAAC game on their new court against Iona on Monday, Dec. 19.
- Both coming off 2021-22 conference championship titles and NCAA Tournament appearances, reigning NEC champion Mount St. Mary’s will host reigning MAAC champion Fairfield on Thursday, Dec. 29 in Emmitsburg, MD.
- The rematch of the 2022 MAAC Championship between Fairfield and Manhattan is slated for Saturday, Jan. 7 in Fairfield, CT and again on Thursday, Feb. 2 in Riverdale, NY.
- “The Battle of the Bridge” series between Canisius and Niagara is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 25 (at Niagara) and Wednesday, Feb. 15 (at Canisius). This match-up will feature the only two unanimous selections on the 2021-22 MAAC All-Rookie Team in Canisius’ Athina Lexa and Niagara’s Aaliyah Parker, the latter of whom was tabbed the unanimous Rookie of the Year.
- 2021-22 Defensive Player of the Year Juana Camilion and the Gaels will take on 2021-22 All-MAAC First Teamer Dee Dee Davis and Third Teamer Brazil Harvey-Carr and the Jaspers on Saturday, Jan. 28 as Manhattan heads to Iona for the crosstown rivalry in New Rochelle, NY.
- Quinnipiac returns 2021-22 All-MAAC First Team selection Mackenzie DeWees and Second Team selection Mikala Morris, who were tabbed the 2020-21 MAAC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively, just two seasons ago. The Bobcats will host reigning MAAC Champion Fairfield in their regular-season finale on Saturday, Mar. 4.
- The season concludes on Saturday, Mar. 4, with Canisius hosting Siena, Niagara hosting Mount St. Mary’s, Quinnipiac hosting Fairfield, Rider hosting Marist, and Saint Peter’s hosting Iona.
