Edison, NJ (January 13, 2023) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announces Wagner College as the 2023 MAAC Water Polo preseason favorites as voted by the leagues head coaches.
Wagner College enters the 2023 season as the preseason favorites, with 89 points and receiving seven out of ten first place votes in the preseason coaches’ poll. Wagner, the reigning league champions, enter the season looking to defend their conference title.
Additionally, three other teams received a single first place vote in the polling. LIU finished second in voting with 87 points, Marist placed third with 83 points, and Iona finished fifth in voting with 57 points.
Wagner’s Abby Simshauser was named Preseason MAAC Player of the Year and La Salle’s Emma Gurasich was selected as Preseason MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year.
The Preseason All-MAAC team features three players from Wagner: Abby Simshauser, Mar Navarro, and Andrea Arias. LIU had two representatives on the Preseason All-MAAC team with Elena Camarena and Paola Dominquez-Castro being selected, and Iona’s Jordan van Reeken and La Salle’s Emma Gurasich complete the All-MAAC honorees.

The 2023 MAAC Water Polo Championship will be held at McCann Natatorium on the campus of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Marist has hosted the Water Polo Championship since 2003. The opening round begins Friday, April 28, followed by the semifinal round on Saturday, April 29, and the final round will take place on Sunday, April 30.
