EDISON, NJ (Feb. 13, 2023) – Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball weekend action concluded on Super Bowl Sunday with a full slate of games. Iona University moved into a share of first-place with idle Rider University following its win over Niagara University, while Siena College kept pace with the Gaels and Broncs, pulling within a half game of first-place as a result of its victory over Marist College on Sunday. Additionally, Canisius College, Fairfield University, and Manhattan College all earned home wins on the day.

Canisius dominated late in the contest, leading to an 85-65 victory over Quinnipiac in MAAC men's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center. The Golden Griffins snapped a six-game losing streak and improved to 4-11 in MAAC play, while the Bobcats fell to 8-7 in conference action with their third-straight defeat. The two teams were knotted through 20 minutes at 37-37, and the game did not open up until late in the second half when Canisius, which led by four, went on a 21-5 run over the final 6:35 to earn the 20-point home triumph. TJ Gadsden scored a career-high 31 points off the bench, while Jordan Henderson added 20 points and Jacco Fritz posted 12 points for Canisius in the win. Matt Balanc recorded 14 points to lead Quinnipiac, with Ike Nweke and Tymu Chenery adding 10 points each.

Fairfield came away with a 76-72 overtime victory over Mount St. Mary’s at home in MAAC men’s hoops action at Mahoney Arena. The Mount led for 33:53 compared to just 5:24 by the Stags, but no team held an advantage larger than five points in the game. The contest produced 11 lead changes and 10 ties, with eight changes and six ties occurring over the final 20 minutes. Down the stretch, Fairfield scored the final seven points in regulation to force overtime. In the extra five minutes, the Stags scored 12 of the period’s 20 points to claim the comeback win. The Stags claimed the season sweep of The Mount and stands at 7-8 in MAAC play while The Mount falls to a 4-11 conference mark. TJ Long led Fairfield with a 21-point afternoon, with Caleb Fields and Supreme Cook adding 14 points apiece, and Allan Jeanne-Rose contributing 12 points. Cook also collected 14 rebounds for a double-double in the victory. Jalen Benjamin led the Mount with 22 points, Dakota Leffew scored 21, and Jedy Cordilia scored 14 in the loss.

Iona used a high scoring first half to earn a 72-55 win over Niagara in MAAC play at the Gallagher Center on Sunday. The Gaels draw even for a first-place tie with an 11-3 record in the MAAC standings, while the Purple Eagles drop to 9-6 in the conference, snapping Niagara’s five-game winning streak. Iona never trailed in the win, taking a 46-29 advantage in the locker room at halftime, after shooting 60.7 percent from the floor in the half. Walter Clayton Jr. sparked the Gaels with a career-high 30 points, Jenkins Daniss scored 11 points, and Nelly Junior Joseph posted a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double in the win. Noah Thomasson led the Purple Eagles with 24 points, six rebounds, and six assists.

Manhattan toppled Saint Peter’s, 68-52, at home in Draddy Gym on Sunday afternoon. The Jaspers used a strong defensive performance in the first half, holding the Peacocks to 14 first-half points on 23 percent shooting, while forcing 10 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. Manhattan’s MAAC record evened out to 7-7 and Saint Peter’s fall to 5-10 on the year. Nick Brennen led the Jaspers in scoring, dropping 12 points, while the trio of Ant Nelson, Marques Watson, and Samir Stewart all contributed 11 points each. Kyle Cardiac led the Peacocks with 16 points and Isiah Dasher added 11 points.

Siena knocked off rival Marist, 73-65, on Sunday at MVP Arena. The Saints earn the regular season sweep over their rival with the win and keep pace with first-place Iona and Rider, sitting a half of game behind them at 11-4 in the MAAC, while the Red Foxes drop to 4-11 in the league with the defeat. Siena led by as many as eight in the first half, taking a 29-25 lead at the break. In the second half, the Saints outscored the Red Foxes 44-40, leading to the eight-point win. Javian McCollum scored his second-straight 20-point game, putting up a 23 point performance, while Andrew Platek scored 18 points and Michael Eley added 11 points in the victory. Patrick Gardner finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and Kam Farris had 11 points for Marist.
