ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (Mar. 9, 2023) – The quarterfinal round of the 2023 Hercules Tires Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s Basketball Championship at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall concluded on Thursday afternoon with the final two semifinal spots filled. No. 6 Manhattan got past No. 3 Quinnipiac University in the day’s opening game, then No. 4 Siena College used a late rally to topple the defending MAAC Champion, No. 5 Fairfield University.

Sixth seeded Manhattan defeated third-seeded Quinnipiac by a score of 50-43 in the quarters on Thursday, securing its spot in the MAAC final four. The Jaspers led for 32:45 compared to just 4:40 for the Bobcats, while the game was tied for 2:35. The Jaspers led by four after one, but the Bobcats strung together what would be their best quarter of the game in the second, outscoring Manhattan 16-9 to take a 26-23 lead into the locker room. In the third, Manhattan used a 10-point swing (13-3), to take a five-point lead of its own, which would never be lost. Down the stretch, the Jaspers iced the game with five crucial free throws to steal the upset win. Dee Dee Davis paced the Jaspers with a game-high 15 points, while Petra Juric recorded a 12 point, 11 rebound double-double. For the Bobcats, Mary Baskerville led the way scoring 12 points and grabbing nine rebounds, while Rose Caverly added 10 points four assists. Manhattan will play in the semifinals for the second straight season, taking on No. 2 Niagara on Friday at 1:30pm.

Fourth-seeded Siena eliminated the defending MAAC Champion, fifth-seeded Fairfield, 59-53, in the last quarterfinal game of the championship. The seesaw affair featured 12 lead changes and seven ties, while the Stags led for 21:36 and the Saints held the lead for 14:31. From the field, Siena shot 37 and 25 percent compared to Fairfield’s 36 and 21 percent, and both shot an identical 67 percent at the line. Tied at 53-53 with less than four to play, the Saints closed out the meeting on a 6-0 run, while holding the Stags scoreless over the final 3:48 which included limiting Fairfield to an 0-for-5 shooting outcome over the timespan. Siena makes its return to the semifinals for the first time since 2018 and will meet No. 1 Iona at 11:00am on Friday.
