BUFFALO, NY (May. 11, 2023) – The 2023 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Softball Championship continued Thursday, May 11 at Canisius College’s Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, NY. The second day of competition had No. 2 Mount St. Mary’s University, No. 3 Marist College, No. 4 Fairfield University and No. 6 Iona University all in action.

2023 MAAC Softball Championship- Day 2
 
In the first game of the day No. 3 Marist upset No. 2 Mount St. Mary’s by a score of 4-2. The No.3 seed will now face top seed Canisius in a 11am matchup.
 
Marist notes
 
- Hannah Brock recorded a two run HR in the seventh inning.
- Marist’s Calista Phippen records her first save since 2/16/2020.
- Marist will move on to the next round where No. 1 Canisius awaits them.
- Kiley Myers struck out her first seven batters on the day and finished with nine strikeouts, allowing just three hits.
-Haley Ahr recorded one hit and an RBI in the 4-2 victory.
-Marist reaches the final of the winner’s bracket for the third time out of the last four MAAC Championships.
 
Mount St. Mary’s Notes
 
- Vanessa Martin drove in two runs with a homerun in the fifth inning.
- Avery Neuhart pitched a full game for Mount St. Mary’s and totaled three strikeouts.
- Mount St. Mary’s moved to the elimination bracket with the loss, where they matched up with No. 6 Iona.

No. 1 Canisius defeated No. 4 Fairfield in the second game of the afternoon in a 6-0 outing. The Golden Griffins will face No. 3 Marist tomorrow at 1:30pm in the next round of the 2023 MAAC Softball Championship. Fairfield will take on No. 6 Iona in the elimination bracket at 1:30pm.
 
Canisius Notes
 
- The top seeded Golden Griffins took down No. 4 Fairfield by a score of 6-0.
- Gianna Fazzolari hit two homeruns to lead the Canisius offense.
- Six different players for Canisius recorded at least one hit in the win.
- Megan Giese struck out 12 batters for a shutout victory.
-The Golden Griffins set a program record for homeruns in a season (37).
-Canisius will face No. 3 Marist at 11am on 5/12 in the next round of the 2023 MAAC Softball Championship.
 
Fairfield Notes
 
- Kaitlin Hoffman recorded the lone hit for Fairfield on the day.
- Fairfield will face off with No. 6 Iona at 1:30pm on 5/12.
-Sam Lindsay pitched two innings for The Stags and Alyssa Weinberg pitched four innings, recording one strikeout.
- Fairfield will play No. 6 Iona tomorrow at 1:30 in the elimination bracket.

In the elimination game on day 2 of the 2023 MAAC Softball Championship, No. 6 Iona upset No. 2 Mount St. Mary’s in a 1-0 contest. Iona will advance to the next round of the elimination bracket where they will face No. 4 Fairfield at 1:30pm.
 
- Iona would score the games lone run in the third inning, on a home run by Emma Capuano.
- Pitcher Kara Zazzaro recorded 14 strikeouts and gave up just two hits in seven innings.
- The Gaels held Mount St. Mary’s scoreless in seven innings of play.
- Iona moves on to the next round in the elimination bracket where they will face Fairfield.
 
 
Mount St. Mary’s Notes
 
- Olivia Murphy recorded six strikeouts in seven innings for The Mount.
- Mount St. Mary’s finishes the season with an overall record of 32-19.
-The 32 wins for this season’s team is a school record.
