SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (May 12, 2023) – The Jacksonville University Dolphins clinched the 2023 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s Rowing Championship on Friday, capturing all three grand final races en route to its second straight title. Jacksonville finished the day with a perfect 42-point total, earning victories in the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, and Varsity Four, claiming the program’s seventh overall conference title.
The morning began with the Varsity Eight Grand Final, in which Jacksonville won by 03.484 over second-place Marist, with a finishing time of 7:12.346. The Red Foxes would cross the finish line in 7:15.830 to claim the silver medal and bronze medalist, Fairfield, finished in a time of 7:19.778.
In the Second Varsity Eight Grand Final, the Dolphins earned their second gold medal of the morning, winning by open water with a margin of 13.374. Jacksonville finished the race in a time of 7:18.845. Second-place finisher Fairfield completed the race in 07:32.219 and Sacred Heart came in third-place with a time of 7:36.171.
The last grand final of the day would also see Jacksonville take gold in the Varsity Four Grand Final. The Dolphins won this race in dominating fashion as well, crossing the line at 7:56.593, almost 20 seconds faster than the runner-up. Sacred Heart crossed the finish line at 8:16.551 and Fairfield earned the bronze medal with a time of 8:21.351.
In addition to the three grand final victories, the Dolphins also took gold and silver in the Second Varsity Four, with their B boat taking first-place (7:57.554), and their A boat coming in second-place (7:59.760). Fairfield’s B boat (8:32.284) took third in the race to cap off the championship.
On the team scoreboard, Fairfield finished in second-place, scoring 32 points, with Marist finishing just behind them in third-place, totaling 30 points and Sacred Heart in fourth-place with 28 points. Stetson followed with 16 points and a fifth-place finish, Canisius was sixth scoring 13 points and Drake tallied seven points to close out the team standings.
Following the conclusion of the championship, the MAAC announced that Sacred Heart head coach Luke Wilhelm was named the 2023 MAAC Women’s Rowing Coach of the Year. Additionally, the MAAC released the complete 2023 MAAC Women’s Rowing All-MAAC Teams. The full list can be found below:

Jacksonville earns the MAAC automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing Championship. The Dolphins will learn who they will compete against on Tuesday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m. when the complete field is revealed during the NCAA Selection Show which will be broadcast on NCAA.com.
